When I was six years old… I was playing in the garden at my family’s manor near the potting shed when I found an old dusty ornate looking glass bottle. Even back then I enjoyed looking at antique bottles and I was quite intrigued with this one. It was green with a fancy looking stopper on the top. Though as hard as I tried I could not pull the stopper out. My cousin Scorpius, who is two years older than I and who was visiting with his mother, came up to me.
“That’s not how you do it silly!” He said. I looked at him perplexed. “How else do you open a bottle?” I asked. Scorpius’s face grew very serious. I should have known he was up to something at that moment but I was too anxious about opening the bottle. Silly indeed. “Oh, don’t you know?” I shook my head no. “That there is a magic bottle. You have to rub it and make a wish and a djinn will come out and grant it to you.” Scorpius folded his arms and nodded sagely while looking very solemn. He read a lot and knew a lot of things. I was often mistakenly impressed by the rubbish he would spout off at me. I looked at the bottle very impressed by its new found ability. I began to rub it. Scorpius walks off chuckling but I am far too engrossed in my magic bottle to pay him any heed.
Later that day my mother finds me still sitting by the potting shed rubbing my bottle. I am beginning to grow very impatient with it. My mother sees this and crouches down next to me. “What are you doing love?” I glare at the bottle. “I am rubbing this stupid bottle but nothing is happening.” My mother is naturally perplexed by this. “Should something be happening Violette?” I continue to glare at my misbehaving bottle. “Yes. Scorpius said so.” Then the realization of my mistake came upon me. “Oh.”
Scorpius is hiding in his favorite spot in the west wing. He always keeps a stash of manga there for when he visits. He has an agreement with the housekeeper. I walk up to him with my hands behind my back. He looks up at me and grins. “Did your wish come true?” I smile slowly. “Oh yes, yes it did.” Scorpius begins to look nervous. As he ought to. “So, umm… what was your wish?” I hold out the bottle I have been concealing behind my back. I relish the look of slow realization then stark fear that comes across my cousin’s pitiful face. “I wished for you to always be with me. Always.”
