description
You are nothing. You used to be at the top of the world, the galaxy's greatest knight. But He betrayed you. And now you must do everything to survive, and save the ones you came to consider Family
The first time he hears about the assassin he’s sitting in a pub on some nameless planet, celebrating the victory of yet another escape from the Order with the crew he came to call family.
The evening is still young and he's pretty sure Ahsoka already had too much to drink. Her laugher is loud in his ears, and it fills him with warmth to see her so happy for once. He squeezes her shoulder as he gets up to use the fresher. On his way back, he can’t help but overhear the animated conversation the big lizard-like creature sitting a few tables away is having in a broken English.
‘I tell you. Mythical assassin! Everyone on the outer rim talk about him. He never miss target. Nobody know who he is, cause cloaked in shadow he always is. Must ask him to help you on this project! Need someone fast and effective, not like lousy booty hunter you used to get Kai’a! He the one who killed The Black Star captain and the Rayit V senator! I tell you, need this man for your job! ’
The green humanoind sitting in front of the lizard replies with a bout of laugher 'The assassin is just a rumor. Captain Quo-Lan died because of a malfunction of his ship and the senator was killed in a rebels attack. Ain't not a single man who could take down such high key targets alone. The assassin is nothing more than a ghost story.'
At this point, Willis was fully listening. Images of the senator death a few months prior filled his mind. It had been widely advertised as a rebels attack by the Order. While his crew didn't directly associate with the rebels, they did deal with them on a regular basis and counsidered them valuable allies. Anyone who even dared associate with the rebels was counsidered an outlaw.
He never believed the rebels had killed the senator, the circumstances of the attack had been too perfectly staged for that. This mystery assassin could very well be the real story.
The weird duo glares at him and the look on their faces makes it clear they know he's been listening. Willis turns around and goes back to his crew before he can get into real trouble. His muscles ached from the lack of sleep and all the bruises he got from ruining for his life, he simply doesn't have the luxury to fight now.
And as he takes more sips from the alcholic beverage his friends shove at him, the assassin turns into nothing more then a weird ghost story heard in a pub in some dark corner of the galaxy.
----------------------------------
The second time he hears about the assassin is because his last victim was someone he knew.
----------------------------------
The first time he sees the assassin he’s fleeing from the Order. They’re hiding on a rogue space station far in the outer rim, cloaking themselves in the shadow of the outlaws passing by, trying to catch a breath while they lick their wounds and fix their ship.
Why the assassin didn’t kill him is a mystery.
----------------------------------
The second time he sees the assassin he knows he’s been following them for a while.
----------------------------------
The third time he sees the assassin is because he saves their lives. They’re on a desert planet when their settlement is attacked.
They don’t have time to see who he is. He’s gone before the storm settles and he wonders if he was not a mere mirage after all.
----------------------------------
The fourth time he sees the assassin he finally sees his face. It’s anticlimactic, they walk into a bar on some rogue outpost and he’s there, sitting at the counter and talking with the bartender while sipping whisky, his long robes hanging from the stool.
He’s not sure what to do with this information, with the fact that the man who meant everything to him, who betrayed him and everything they fought for, is still alive after all. That even after all the attrocities this man has done, all the people he killed, the chaos he brought on the whole galaxy, Willis stills feels like the weight of the world was lifted from his shoulders. All he can think of, all he can focus his thoughts on is 'He's alive.'
He orders another drink and when he falls into a drunken sleep that night he dreams of azure eyes on a burning planet and everything that was and could have been.
----------------------------------
And it probably makes him as much of a sinner to not care at all what Mustafa has done. The world has turned to shit. The whole galaxy is at war and he's been running for so damn long. He used to be young and ready to die to save the world, Now he's just old and tired and he can count the number of people he'll die for on the fingers of one hand.
There was a time where he could make a difference, where the things he said and the actions he took had a real influence, where they both could change destiny, where they did change the course of the universe. But this time is gone, it was turned to ashes on a burning planet at the same time as the fate of the galaxy. Now they're nothing more than two grains of sand in the sandstorm that is this endless war.
So he puts his gun in his holster, gets up to the bar, and sits beside Ani. Ani smiles at him, and suddenly Willis is thirty again.
They don't say anything, partly because there is nothing to say, mostly because the simple fact that they are together once again is enought for now.
If it feels anything like getting lost in those azure eyes, he's more then willing to burn in hell.
