Story

Colors! Beautiful Fall colors! Two, three, four bounds and one big leap and there I was, up to my ears in crisp leaves. The world looked like it had been painted in ruby reds and sunny yellows with trees orange like fire and the earth turning rusty. The colors were so distinct yet they ran together, like whoever or whatever painted us here forgot to rinse out their paintbrush. It was because of these beautiful colors that I went on a great adventure.

I was lying under a large oak tree, watching the sun's rays pour in around the branches and leaves when one that was falling caught my eye. I watched it all the way until it landed in front of me. There was a small bug crawling on it. The bug seemed to be following the veins in the leaf like they were little roads. The more I stared the more I could see, my imagination started to sharpen as my mind started to get fuzzy and within the blink of an eye, the whole world changed.

I was staring at a tiny explorer crawling on a treasure map. Little black spots on the leaf seemed to dance around and turn into mountain ranges and holes in the leaf turned into lakes. Some of the veins in the leaf suddenly became rivers and the tip of the leaf marked the spot where the treasure lay. My forest was no longer just my forest. It was an uncharted jungle and I was an explorer. I changed my mind suddenly and the little bug wasn't just any tiny explorer, it was me. I decided I was holding an enchanted leaf-map and the bug showed me where I was and where I was going. I followed paths through the forest checking my map all the while, following the bug wherever it went .

As I was walking I collected leaves. Interesting colors, patterns, shapes and textures became a part of my collection. I took in the smell of autumn as I went. I took in the crunch of the leaves. I took in the sudden chill when walking through shady spots and the bursts of warmth when walking through patches of sunlight. I loved Autumn so much that I was completely absorbed in the world around me and I wanted to soak it up right back. In fact, I'd been so distracted by my surroundings that I'd wandered further from home than I'd meant to. I decided to rest before I went back to the great tree.

I piled some leaves up in a patch of sunlight and laid down. I sat the little leaf with the bug on it down and settled further into my leaf pile. I finally let my eyes close and began talking aloud to the little bug. I thanked it for the adventure and wondered where it was going. I'd hoped it hadn't gone too far from home and wished it good luck on its own journey. Finally I bid it farewell and opened my eyes again. My imagination was starting to take off again as soon as the sun glinted gold through the leaves. Once again the whole world changed in the blink of an eye.

I was no longer sitting on a pile of damp fallen leaves. I was sitting upon a golden throne. The deep purple leaves scattered around sat in my throne like great amethyst jewels. It wasn't just a stick with auburn leaves next to me. That was my scepter adorned with great rubies the size of eggs. The little bug that had led me on the journey here was now my knight and body guard, left to be with it's family. I stood up like a high royal leaving their palace and marched down the pathway toward home. In my imagination I was on the greatest adventure ever. My mission was to get back to my cave near the big oak tree without the protection of the knight, before winter set in.

Even in real life I hated winter. I hated the snow, the way I slid around on the ice, the way the wind pierced me and my bones ached when I shivered. Autumn was my favorite because it was not as intensely hot as summer, not as miserably cold as winter and less prone to thunderstorms and tornadoes than springtime. The changing leaves in blazing reds and oranges, vivid yellows, deep purples and browns were always more interesting to me than flowers budding or snowflakes falling and I could collect the leaves and keep them for a long time. Budding flowers wilted and died, snowflakes melted and disappeared but the leaves dried out and stayed that way.

As I neared my cave I came back to the real world. I was tired and happy from my day of exploring. I was still thinking of the little bug and the map, my golden throne and my growing leaf collection, but I didn't want anything more than to rest in my cave and add my new leaves to the rest. I spread them out to look at them but started to fall asleep wondering somewhere in a distant corner of my mind if maybe tomorrow would bring even more interesting adventures.
