Screams echoed down the corridors of the ship, flames ripping through the belly of it climbing higher and higher. The inferno was out of control and the intensity of it was making the machinery malfunction. It was only a matter of time before the flying ship dove out of the sky and met the ground.
The Siren’s Song was a sight to behold; the pirate ship was painted to match the soft hues of the setting sun and trimmed with golden adornments. Inside she had the most up-to-date technology and navigation systems and plenty of room for supplies and crew. And now she was burning from the inside out, the flames burning down crewmen and her own structure without discrimination.
Groaning as she came to from being knocked unconscious, Maude touched a hand to forehead, fingertips coming away with blood. “Shit…” she muttered as she pulled herself up from the floor of the engine room. The machinery whined and whirred from the strain of trying to keep the ship airborne without someone behind the navigation system. Steam and fluids spit forth from the engine from effort but it wouldn’t be long before it gave way. Maude couldn’t be here when it did.
Staggering as she got to her feet, the legeica blinked back the blurry vision and dizziness in her head as she made her way from the engine room and tried to get top deck. Other than the screaming of the engine, the lower parts of the deck were eerily quiet and void of anyone else besides her. They’d evacuated to top deck to secure the emergency pods she was sure. They were the only hope of anyone getting off this damned ship alive.
Flames erupted from several areas and the sweltering heat slowed Maude as she tried to get out of immediate danger. The creak of a beam above her caused her to look up just in time to see one of the heavy steel beams let loose, crashing in front of her as she jumped back out of the way. Eyes widening as the steel beam now blocked her path out, she became frantic. ‘I have to get out of here’ she kept repeating in her mind as she searched the area for another way out. The flames grew and grew and the heat intensified. All the paths she knew of were blocked, engulfed in flames or simply impassable. There was no way out.
The smoke grew thicker and forced her to get low to the deck to find breathable air. Coughing as the smoke invaded her nose and throat, she felt her breath growing short and labored. ’This is it,’ she thought to herself, feeling the sting of tears as they welled in her eyes, drying before they could slide down her cheeks. Another beam above her whined and shifted but she didn’t move. It was a far faster death to be crushed than it was to be burned alive.
”Maude!” A sudden voice cut through the noise of the inferno as it consumed the Siren’s Song. Just as the beam started to fall, a body suddenly collided with hers, throwing both of them out of the path of the falling beam. Wide-eyed, she whirled her eyes up to look at her rescuer; it was her brother, Darius. “Come on!” He urged her to her feet, pulling her fast through heart of the ship.
”There’s no way out, Darius,” Maude said, trying to pull him to a stop, but he was relentless and strong enough to continue to pull her along. She thought it was useless, a fruitless venture—then suddenly she could feel the air lighten and see the smoke thinning. One more flight of stairs and they were on the top deck. Gasping as they fled into the cleaner air above, the scene up there wasn’t any less horrific. Bodies were scattered across the deck and flames were starting to climb up the masts, destroying the sails and rigging. And all the pods were gone.
Standing with her mouth open in shock at it all, the earth below was growing closer and closer and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Looking up at her brother, her dear Darius, with tears in her eyes, Maude leaned into him and wrapped her arms around him. “I love you, brother,” she whispered, her throat growing tight at their impending doom.
She felt his arms close around her, holding her tightly as he whispered an ‘I love you’ back. Then suddenly the world was silent. Darkness came crashing in, and then nothing.
’What happened? Where did she come from?’
’Her body was found at the crash site.’
’Were there any survivors?’
’Just her. And I’m not certain she will make it through the night.’
’Is there anything I can do? Can I help?’
’Pray.’
Darkness. It lingered for what seemed an eternity. Then suddenly there was light. White, blinding light that shone as she opened her eyes. Blinking against the harsh light, her eyes couldn’t adjust, couldn’t make sense of anything. And then the pain was there. It burned and throbbed over her whole body. Gasping from the sudden sharpness of the pain, she saw a shadow come into view, blocking the light.
“Lie still. You’ve been burned over a large portion of your body.” That voice… she recognized it. ”You’re in the burn unit at the hospital in Indigo. You’re in good hands. Rest now… you need it to heal, to recuperate.”
Somehow she had lived, had made it through the Siren’s Song’s last flight… but how? Even as she asked herself the question, memories came flooding back in a series of flashes. Her bother embracing her, the inferno overtaking the deck, the crash. Somehow her brother got injured and she was pinned under the weight of his unconscious body. She couldn’t move him, couldn’t save him. Even if she’d been strong enough, her leg was broken. Then the flames came. She screamed, cried out in pain as they devoured her body. Her brother’s body had protected her from the worst of it, shielded her from some of the flames. He never woke again. The flames took him away and soon the pain was too much and her vision had gone black.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as the memories flashed through her mind and she recalled what had happened. She’d lost her brother in the blaze, her father, everyone aboard the Siren’s Song. They were all dead. She was the last of them, the only survivor of a horrific accident. ‘Now what?’ She asked herself as the tears slid down her face, lying face up in the hospital bed. Was there really life after something like this? Could she go on living when all those she loved were dead?
