Jackson

Jackson was the only one on deck when the sea maiden appeared, sun browned skin seeming to glow in the night, black hair curling about her head as if the horns of some angry oceanic beast. Her bare feet were sturdy on the slick deck, and as she crossed the space between them, he could see that her eyes seemed to flash, as if she were filled to the brim with moving water. In a flash his mind was back in the pub where he had first heard the tale.

"Aye, and they call her Midnight Jack." The grizzled old captain whispered out the side of his mouth, favoring the side that still had teeth. "Do yee know why they bother with the midnight?" A rhetorical question--everyone knew, but everyone also knew that this was part of the story, and that the pirate had not expected an answer. He leaned in close to Jackson, who in his minds eye was quite dapper and clean shaven, and with whiskey on his breath, "Because she only appears when the moon is high, and the sky is as dark a blue as the ocean deep. Midnight."

And here she was. There was a fierce beauty about her, and it was all Jackson could do not to gawk at her natural body, which seashells and other various forms of sea life did little to hide from his sight. Her mouth opened and it seemed to fill his ears with roaring water, words floating beneath the surface in a light an playful current.
"Thank you for my ship."
They were the only words she spoke before she transformed, delicate hands becoming thick claws, majestic wings coming out of her back, and a heavy tail uncurling onto the deck.
