a really complicated timeline (maybe)

- born in Riften to parents who were part of the Dark Brotherhood & Thieves Guild
- parents were closely trusted subordinates of the Listener at that time, Alisanne Dupre; died protecting her & Night Mother's coffin a year+ later
- they knew they could die at any time; had a will declaring Soren be raised by a close friend (who is later the Dragonborn's wife). was instead taken in by Mercer Frey (who destroyed that will & forged another + really just aimed to loot whatever the family had left); dropped him off at Honorhall shortly after learning that his parents were colluding w/ Karliah to oust him + bc they left nothing for him to steal since they knew he was slimy (they'd left anything impt w/ said friend...except the note apparently ??)
- quickly learns how to live around Grelod w/o inciting too much of her anger; bothers her the least bc he sneaks out and gets what he wants so he doesn't have much to complain about.
- growing up, he wonders who his parents were/what they did/etc. is complacent, however, since he doesn't get in trouble as much + thinks he can ride it out until he's old enough and scram.
- sneaks in food for the other children; becomes something of a Robin Hood among them.
- though he never got to know his parents, he's naturally sharp and nimble; becomes fascinated w/ the prospect of entering some sort of cloak-and-dagger profession (basically fate leads him into a path that his parents followed)
- becomes close friends w/ Aventus who talks to him about the Aretino family w/ a sense of pride and honor. sparks a feeling inside to find out who his parents were.
- Aventus tells him about the Dark Brotherhood and, actually, has heard about the previous Listener's top subordinates and their supposed son who went missing. eventually pieces smth together and finds out his parents may have been members/maybe he was the son?
- the two later then decide to escape the orphanage, with Aventus going to Windhelm to call upon the DB, and Soren to Solitude bc he wants a fresh start/to collect himself and uncover his past
- 11 yrs old!! to 16!! for the most part gets waylaid by normalcy there + his fear to pursue the past. runs errands for the local innkeeper, who takes a liking to him, in return for food & lodging.
- at first, he would get in trouble w/ the guards for stealing from bandits. the guards at the gate usually had it easy, but since he came to town, on occasion he'd lead a trail of bandits to the guards and run, catching them by surprise (most of them just want a nice, quiet day). eventually becomes more skilled; starts being hired by the middle & upper classes to retrieve valuables stolen by thieves.

other stuff

- he picks up reading and a bit of alchemy thanks to Selane; isn't super fond of whittling, but is good at it & carves her dolls or containers or smth in his free time
- would love to man a ship or at least a boat. oddly enough, dislikes fish.
- enjoys venturing into caves for the loot but really hates skeevers & those other pests; has learned to silence them quietly without touching them (thanks to his dart throwing + bow and arrow)
- they're too young to be politically involved but both Aven + Soren would side w/ Imperials; Aven hates Ulfric for tossing him in Riften. Soren is more passive but doesn't agree w/ Stormcloaks' cause and Ulfric's usurpation of the throne + has met kinder Imperial folks since he's not 100% a Nord (so Stormcloaks just ignore him) :c
- they keep in touch throughout the years; eventually both find their way into their aspiring professions (probably assassins? may or may not be part of the DB, but they do well for their keep) and are close partners
- Dragonborn's wife secretly kept an eye on Soren after her friends' deaths, but at a distance; she was also in a dangerous position so it was better he remained in Honorhall living a (considerably) plainer life; also thought it'd be better he didn't discover & follow in their paths for vengeance or smth some angsty uchiha plot//he surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) fared well so she never thought it was necessary to interfere, but would be ready to if he was in danger.
- eventually does come into his life and becomes his guardian; he essentially becomes the Dragonborn's son. Dragonborn offers him a post at (???) but he passes (the company he forms much later on w/ Aven enters a joint relationship w/ DB's though ??)
- lives pretty comfortably in Solitude from then on but since he was already 16, he's usually never around, busying himself w/ new missions and adventuring and whatnot.
- does Selane follow him or does she start up a herbal apothecary or smth and just flourish among all of the flowers and septims? ghh i want all of my characters to be adventurers but i don't really know
- this ended up being more about the bromance than any sort of romance sigh......
