Santa placed the last present under the tree and stood up, admiring the scene before him. Wrapping presents was sometimes hard work, especially after eating lots of cookies.The children who lived here were going to be very happy when they woke up. For Tom, he'd left action figures and dinosaurs. Sue had received a lovely pink dress and a book about fairy tales.

Looking around, he spied a miniature carousel resting on the mantel above the fireplace. Walking a few steps closer, he reached out and turned it around slowly, admiring the small, colorful horses. There was one in particular that appealed to him greatly-it had warm caramel-hued fur and a creamy white mane. He ran a finger lightly along its saddle, then turned around, ready to go on to the next house. He didn't notice when the eyes of the carousel horse started to twinkle and shine.

The next morning, Sue woke up before everyone else and rushed downstairs to open her presents. To her surprise, she found a handsome brown horse standing beside the tree. She begged her parents to let him stay, and they agreed, mostly out of shock that there was an animal in the living room at all. Sue named the horse Caramel, for the color of his fur, and decided he was her favorite present that year. No one ever noticed the empty place in the carousel on the mantel
