oh god don't read me this is just a rough draft oh god

She's been repairing me for as long as I can remember, and I know it won't stop. I'm very fortunate to have fallen into the arms of Ariel. She wants to share me with her children one day, and has even warned that they likely won't be as careful (this is when I try not to laugh) as she was. I know more tears and patches are in my future, and I'm pretty excited to get out there and earn some more.

Things have been pretty mellow lately, we've both grown up. We've been on a lot of adventures together, and I'm pretty lucky that she still keeps me around. I mean look at me, I'm a wreck! I've got bald places on my butt and my ears where my cords have worn right down to the wale. More than half of my fabric has been replaced in some way or another by now. I know some toys whisper things about "plastic surgery" and how it's "unethical," but I feel more myself now than I ever have. Not all of them have owners who would take the time to patch them up when they're down, and would rather buy a new companion. Not my girl. Every rip and tear was earned together, and each piece of fabric that I've been lucky enough to incorporate into my body is really just another part of me. Each one tells a story.

Hover around my body if you want to learn about how I got each addition!

1) When she was about 12, she'd worked up the wieners into a crazy tornado of fur and teeth, and one mistook me for a squeaky toy. My poor right ear was a disaster! She had just recently outgrown one of her favorite dresses, and was having a hard time parting with it. What better way to immortalize it than by sewing a scrap into my ear? It was a pretty strange sight to see: her maniacally cutting up a dress she once loved so dearly. This was the day where I really, truly understood how special I am to her. And how special she is to me.

2) My eyes took the most getting used to. Originally I just had these beady little things, really terrible actually. Completely disproportionate for my frame. My left eye was the first to go. Fell right off and rolled into a gutter. She was heartbroken; cried all the tears I couldn't. It was the first major injury I'd had and it was harder on her than it was on me. After a few days she had the first brilliant idea that would spawn dozens more as time went on. She could make me a new one! She ran outside to the treehouse, shaved a sliver off with a blade that really couldn't have been much sharper than a butter knife, and got to workin'. It was pretty terrifying to watch. After she cut it into a perfect circle, she sanded it down and tried her best to paint a plaid design on it. I'm not quite sure why she went with plaid, but she tells me it went with my stripes, and that she wanted me to have a cooler eye than anyone else. I felt really off balance for a while, but I could see more clearly than before. Not long after this, she realized that both of my eyes had been sewn on with the same thread, and the other one was literally hanging by a thread. Luckily she knew just what to do!

3) I don't even remember what caused this one, but I know my armpit had gotten pretty much ripped to shreds. She was really nervous, this was the first major reconstruction she'd done and she really didn't want to leave me impaired. The fabric is from

4) Can you tell this is when she learned to knit? I swear, I'm always the guinea pig for when she learns some new technique! This patch is my most elaborate, but doesn't even have an interesting story. I just busted wide open one day. I'd noticed that area had worn fairly thin, but didn't think much of it. Then POP I went! I secretly think she was rough with me that day so she'd have something to repair now that she had learned a new craft...

5) I really don't know what prompted it, but at one point she decided it was strange I didn't have a belly button. I mean I can see her point, I guess. It is a pretty fun thing to have! She set out to the craft store with a plan, marched right over to the clay section, and got to pondering. She decided on this mild shade of pink and painted polka-dots on after she baked it. She was right, everyone needs a belly button.

6) My foot? I think it's my favorite addition because it's the loudest. I can't quite remember how old she was, but I know she'd gotten some flack for bringing a stuffed animal to camp. But she didn't care. She dragged me around everywhere that week, and I got filthier than I'd ever been in my life. The night before we headed back home, she dropped a hot marshmallow skewer onto my foot. It burned right through. She grabbed me and ran back to her tent trying not to cry. She always has a sewing kit with her, but it caught even me off guard when she got it out and started repairing me, right then and there, lantern in hand. She didn't have many fabric options, and really didn't want to sew a mere t-shirt onto me. I could tell she was reluctant at first, she'd always prided herself on how well I matched, but ended up using an old picnic blanket. I think this is when she realized what I'd become. I was a tangible scrapbook that had grown with her.

7) At this point, she was very conscious of the fiber craft diary I'd become, and kept a vigilant eye out for future patching materials. She was older now, so the days of my traumatic injuries had mostly passed. She was really just fixing up some worn seams and doing what she could to insure that I'd survive. This fabric is some leftovers from the curtains she made when she moved out. I'm pretty sure she designed that living room with me in mind.
