don't say a word
the world isn't ready
and it's not your turn
break the silence

The clouds drifted gently across the bleak sky. There was a mild, nippy breeze that came & went, nothing unbearable. It lifted some hair from the boy's face, if only to get a quick glance at him before putting it back. A part of him wished it would just blow him away.
It was one of those days that aren't quite anything - nameless, no identity, an in-between that soon will never have existed at all. A ghost; shadow-day made of light. Something made simply to disappear...
He opened his eyes. In the same motion his lips parted, but he quickly closed them again. He had nothing to say. He never did. Instead he bit his lower lip, tearing off a chapped piece of skin before spitting it out again. The taste of blood teased the tip of his tongue. Ugly. But at least it was some kind of real. Not like him. Not like today. Not like anything he knew.
The boy fell back and rested his head on his hands. Birds entered & exited his line of sight like trespassers. Loud creatures. So proud. Capable. Mindless. Noisy, noisy, noisy. He felt a deep distaste form in his mouth. Jealousy. At least he could admit it now - he used to just say he hated them. Now he didn't know what to do. Block them out? Learn from them? He watched as one of the silhouettes cried out to its mates. Disgusting creatures. How he wanted to be like them.
A faint buzz alerted the boy to the bumblebee’s take-off. It glid up above his face, but as he reached out the bee decided that actually, taking another break wouldn't be such a bad idea.
Bee on finger, the boy sat up. Why are you so loud? he asked, barely more pronounced than a whisper. How do you do it? The bee looked at him with big, shiny eyes, cocking its head back & forth ever so slightly. How can you just.. disturb the world like that? The boy's eyes grew blurry as the fire inside him flickered. How..? The bee lifted itself from his hand and hovered for a moment before taking off into the bloom. How..? Red hot iron clawed across the boy's tongue as he bit his lips shut. He fell into himself as he always did, as if into a maelstrom of nothingness.
