the female galactic ruffie
character and pet property of nobody
laika polaris. twenty three. female. russian. former cosmonaut who has found her home in the stars - has now been given a life on earth, but longs more than anything to return where she truly belongs. her scent is often described as what one must think stardust smells like. you will struggle to find a harder worker and a kinder friend than this sweet girl.

due to her childhood, as well as the months of training she had undergone to become a certified space traveler, she is a tough girl - perhaps not the first impression one would get of such a gentle seeming individual. the first reliable impression one might get from her is that she is a total space cadet - in more ways than one! the girl is obsessed with space - and i mean obsessed. laika never stops thinking about space.

her determination and focus is unmatched - though more often than not she has a bit of trouble looking at the big picture. she loves astronomy, and studies it relentlessly. she even has a soft spot for astrology and other pseudosciences, though she knows in her heart of hearts that they aren't real. laika is the most starry-eyed of idealists. she can come across as absent-minded; not out of lack of intelligence, but because her mind is always elsewhere.

laika loves stargazing. she loves all things that glow. she has a penchant for mystery. she works at a planetarium and often sleeps there even though it isn't allowed - her boss doesn't have the heart to yell at her for it. for someone who seems to be quite the realist, she has an undeniable starry-eyed streak.
some animal stats.

( notes )
laika is as friendly as a dog can be, though her nature is not outwardly extroverted and social. it seems she is consumed by wanderlust and an undying passion for adventure. she is not content to leave any question unanswered, and will go to the edge of the universe to seek truth and knowledge. described as 'quiet, charming, and phlegmatic', the three year old mongrel has long been the face of soviet space exploration. lifted from relative obscurity, she has become a household name internationally. in 1957, she became the first animal launched into orbit, paving the way for human spaceflight. though other animals - including dogs - had been on flights prior to her own, they were merely sub-orbital. she would be the first creature to truly see and experience the vastness and mystery of space. though her story is said to have ended abruptly and miserably, laika prefers life among the stars to life on the ground. once she set her sights on the horizon, she knew this was where she belonged.

the young mutt grew up on the streets of moscow; and in that time, she had endured the harshest of weather conditions, extreme and often deadly temperatures, and debilitating hunger. life had never been easy for her, but she did not allow this existence to make her grow bitter. instead, she treated life and survival as if it were a grand adventure - a game of sorts. when she was chosen by soviet scientists and taken from the life she had known, she did so with no hesitation; bright eyed and bushy tailed as ever. upon arrival, she was a mere eleven pounds, though hardy in resolve and stature. she quickly won the hearts of the personnel, earning her many nicknames during her time in training; among them Kudryavka (Little Curly), Zhuchka (Little Bug), and Limonchik (Little Lemon). laika did not quarrel with the other dogs, and responded calmly and obediently to their commands. she seemed as eager as they were for what she could only assume was a grand adventure. she withstood their testing despite intense discomfort and at times sickness. nothing could keep her down.

the big day arrived, and she could feel the frenetic energy as it raced throughout the room - though it was tinged with something more, something dark that she could not comprehend. up until this moment, everyone had been so excited, and each had played off the energy and anticipation of the others, including the young pup. she had made leaps and bounds in preparing, and had been praised endlessly in her pursuits. it seemed as if everyone was rushing now - as if they hadn't had time to prepare for the reality of what they would face today. laika did not know what she had been chosen for - she only knew that she was ready. she always had been. once laika was placed into the familiar confines of the cockpit, the scientists gathered around, and the grim feeling settled on her. her smile faltered, but she grinned proudly at the men standing before her, faces she had grown to love in the time she had spent with them. she was certain they felt the same way.

before closing the hatch, each man took a moment to kiss her on her nose and wish her a safe flight, giving her a scratch or two under the chin or behind the ears. she enjoyed the attention and affection, but it only proved to make her more confused. why was everyone so upset? she did not understand - but they knew she would not survive the flight. laika was said to have died within hours of takeoff from panic and overheating; it was a devastating experience for those waiting on earth. the heartache was felt around the world, but no where stronger than among her soviet comrades. even if she had managed to make it through much of the flight, they had no ability to return her to earth - the technology simply wasn't enough. after five months of orbit, in april of 1958 sputnik ii burned up upon re-entering the atmosphere. those who worked with her stated we did not learn enough from the mission to justify the death of the dog.

but what if i told you laika was still alive? what if she is merely up there among the stars, floating through space and exploring the far corners of the universe? despite the plea of headlines around the world asking 'laika, please come home'... what if she was already there? there is no greater adventure, no greater unknown than space, no greater place for the little cosmonaut. laika has watched as space travel and exploration has grown, hoping someday that others will join her among the beautiful galaxies. she even greeted her successors, belka and strelka, with a smile - showing them everything she had learned before guiding them safely home to earth.
