The day Persephone was taken from him, Hades let out a wail that quaked the entirety of the Underworld.

It had been Demeter's doing, that much had been obvious. She had always hated him, believing he had been tainting her daughter and forcing her to live with him. That was a lie, of course. Hades loved Persephone with his entire being and she loved him just as powerfully. It was this unbreaking love that made them both agree to the ingestion of only six pomegranate seeds, in hopes of calming her angered mother. It had worked, but not for as long as they had hoped. Six months had clearly not been long enough for Demeter, who now deemed Persephone ruined. She needed to take Persephone away from the evil god of the Underworld and so, she did. She entered the Underworld and nearly killed Cerberus, who had been trying to protect a horrified Persephone.

"Mother, please! I beg of you, stop this madness! You are making a mistake, I love Hades!"

"Only because he tricked you into believing so! I am saving you, my beautiful daughter. You will be reborn untainted and perfect, just like before. I will always be there to make sure that he doesn't kidnap you ever again."

Upon returning to the Underworld after a meeting with Hera, Hades found Cerberus at the cusp of death's door and Persephone nowhere to be found. He searched and searched desperately for his beloved wife, but in the end, he could not find her, only finding a seed of a narcissus flower— a sign of her eternal love to him.

None of his brethren from Olympus were of any help, though Zeus offered his condolences, as empty as they were. Hades could not find the strength to watch over the Underworld and perform his duties without his wife by his side, so he ordered Charon to watch over what he could while he began a long journey to find Persephone. On the harder days, he could have sworn to see her, smiling as though she was not merely a ghost at his side. He could hear her voice, begging him to keep looking for her and with a heavy heart, he did.

In the end, decades of searching only led him on a fruitless journey around the world and with a growing loss of hope. It was then that Hermes came to the mourning god, face full of guilt.

"I know where your wife is," the god told him, smiling sadly. "But she is no longer the Persephone you once knew and loved."

"Please," Hades begged, "Show me."

"I will," Hermes promised, "Just don't tell her it was me that helped you."

Demeter, in the form of an older woman, looked absolutely thunderous at the sight of Hades. Her anger could truly rival Zeus' some days.

"Where is she?" Hades demanded and Demeter could only laugh at his sheer insolence.

"My daughter? Right where she should be, with her mother." Demeter turned away from him and gently pushed forward a small child in front of her. Hades' heart dropped, staring at the little girl in horror. She looked nothing like Persephone. Her hair color, her skin, everything about the child was different.

And yet, deep inside of himself, he knew it was her.

"What have you done?"

"What I will continue to do for all of the future to come." Without a hint of remorse on her face, Demeter lifted her hands up and snapped the little girl's neck. "I curse you, Hades. For as long as you search for Persephone, I will continue to kill her and myself. We will be reborn anew, and your search will simply start again." Demeter laughed as she reached up towards her own head. "You cannot win Hades, Persephone will only come to love me, and no one else. A mother's love is all she needs."

With a deafening snap Demeter's body crumpled to the floor.

"Sir."

Hades' Dante's eyes snap open, squinting up at his assistant, Maeson, who was peering down at him. The spirit's face was etched with worry. "Are you alright, sir?"

"I'm fine," Dante quickly dismisses, sitting up from the couch he had clearly fallen asleep on. "Just needed a nap." Maeson doesn't seem to buy that and being one to never hold his tongue, spoke up immediately.

"Dreaming of the incident?"

"Only the first time," Dante admits, "That's the one that hurt the most."

"Things are better now," Maeson says gently, "You're with her now." Dante can't help but crack a smile.

"I doubt Matthew would appreciate being called her."

"Oh, but of course."

Some lifetimes, Hades never finds the reincarnated Persephone, as Demeter hides them far too well. Other times, he's lucky, and they find each other once again. Demeter always fights him when they find each other, refusing to let him take her precious child away from her.

He's killed Demeter more times than he's willing to admit.

Matthew Colomar was not what Hades had been expecting, but then again, the new lives rarely were. The newest reincarnation of Persephone was a cold and stubborn young man who had been immediately wary of Hades' current life, a man by the name of Dante. This had been one of the luckier meetings; Demeter's overprotective tendencies had been driving her son away and Dante had shown up at the breaking point of their relationship.

Admittedly, it had been much easier for him to fall in love with Matthew than some of the other forms.

He can hear the dogs scampering down the stairs, footsteps followed right behind them and he allows himself to relax. Cerberus, now split into three different dogs, watch Matthew as the male steps down the stairs with a yawn. "Morning Dante."

"Afternoon," Dante corrects, amusement laced in his voice. Matthew simply rolls his eyes and walks off to the kitchen.

"Come on Maeson, make me some pancakes!" Maeson makes a face of utter distaste.

"What flavor?" He sighs as he follows after the young god.

"Bananas and strawberries!"

Dante leans back against the couch, allowing his rottweiler to settle down beside him. He fears the day when this all ends and it's a fear that manifests with every passing lifetime. One day Matthew will pass on and Dante will once again change his name and form. He will go back to searching for his lost love, the only thing connecting them together is Persephone's soul, constantly calling out for him. She will haunt him for the rest of eternity, but as Dante closes his eyes to the sound of Matthew's laughter, he knows that he doesn't mind.

And he never will.
