Laila stood in the beam of the spotlight. Everyone listened closely as the last note left her lips, and her cheeks flushed when the audience broke into applause. People said the lounge singer was going to be the next big star. Smiling to herself, Laila left the stage to gather her belongings and head out.

Outside, there was a light rain coming down. Laila debated on whether to wait for it to stop, or start walking to her next destination, the Flamingo Hotel. It wasn't far, only a few blocks over. She took a small umbrella out of her purse, opened it, and went on her way.

Laila was very grateful that she had such amazing luck with singing. In fact, she seemed to have a lot of luck with everything in life. She'd been the only child of her well-to-do parents, but they had raised Laila well. Her manners were excellent; she was nice to everyone she met.

Due to Laila's angelic looks, there was always one gentleman or another courting her. She went out on dates whenever she had the time, and rarely had a serious boyfriend. Maybe that was her one mistake, the point at which her luck ran out.

As Laila walked, she thought of the man she was going to meet at the hotel. He seemed to like her a lot, but she wasn't so sure about him. He seemed like the jealous type and drama was something that didn't fit into her life. In fact, she was going to break up with him as soon as she arrived at his room. It was more decent to do it in person, rather than over the phone.

No one saw Laila again after that night, and she is presumed dead. Her grieving parents had the police search for weeks, but the body was never found. Occasionally, on stormy nights, people report seeing a ghostly apparition standing across the street from the Flamingo Hotel. She holds a black umbrella, and sings a forlorn melody.
