The wanna be Beast Tamer

Nevac first learned he could talk to animals when he was a child. When he told his parents their dog was complaining about the food, they laughed and told him that was cute.
As he got older, he continued to speak about his abilities yet it was no longer cute. It was worrying, annoying, childish. So Nevac withheld his secret and instead strived to figure out how it worked, and why he had it, on his own.
He worked in a lot of veterinarian places as an intern for summer pay. It was there he learned that animals did not seem to like him as much as he liked them. They quite honestly found it odd that a human could understand him, and most were wary of him and his ability. It wasn't like the Dr. Dolittle movies at all! It wasn't helpful either when after he finally was able to coax the animals to reveal where they hurt, the veterinarians didn't believe him.
"How do you know that? Have you examined them?" they would ask. To which he would respond no, they would scoff, and go about their business to not correctly treating the animal until much later.
He tried zoos but it was all the same. Skittish animals, disbelieving people, and an animal suffering because of it.
Nevac couldn't stand it. Was being young or inexperienced a crime now?
He set his sights on college yet there were too many choices, and too little signs telling him which to take. So he decided to do the unthinkable.
He ran away and joined a circus.
Most circuses had gotten rid of animal acts due to the press and PETA breathing down their necks, but there were some that still held that long tradition. If there was anyone that would listen to him, it'd be them surely? There was no need for licenses, degrees, or show of experience. All he needed was himself and a willing spirit.
It was honestly easier than he expected to join and though his family threw an absolute fit, Nevac was determined to stay the course he had chosen.
He has to barter and bribe on a daily basis for the animals not to eat him, yet slowly but surely, he's carving his path in this world.

"Come on, Chester, help me to help you!"
"No," the old lion wheezed out, a cough cutting him off before he could say more. Nevac frowned and pressed closer to the cage.
"I was a vet I told you, and I won't hurt you!"
"No," the lion spat more forcibly. Nevac's frown deepened as he crouched to get to the lion's eye level, concern flaring up within him to see the eyes streaming and bloody red.
"Chester, you're in pain and you're obviously sick. I already had to separate you from Simba because I couldn't have him get infected. Do you really want to give up your spot in the circus because you were too stubborn to get treated?" The lion stared stonily back and Nevac let out a sigh as he stood. After almost a year, the older lion still looked at him like an enemy. He was beginning to taint Simba's mind too if the bites along his fingers meant anything.
"Just let him die," a male tiger snapped from his cage, head balanced on his paws. "It's not as if he listens to you anyway, why should you care?"
"As if you listen any better, Nico! You nearly took my hand off in our last show!" The tiger grinned toothily and Nevac resisted the urge to shudder at the sight of them.
"It adds excitement to the show." Nevac sighed again, deeper this time and faced Chester once more.
"Chester, please, I just want to check you out. I only wanna help you get better. Don't you wanna see Simba again and not spend all day with Nico here?" The lion growled before shifting his head to his paws, tail flickering angrily behind him.
"Fine! But one wrong move, and not even extra scraps of red meat will save you!" Nevac swallowed audibly at that yet hurried towards the cage door before he could change his mind.

Ringo never liked him messing with the animals by himself, after all he (and everyone else) had seen them nearly take an arm or leg on many occasions. It was a wonder Ringo still allowed him to perform honestly, but he hadn't ever revealed to them his ability.
Nor would he.
But, that only meant he'd have to be quick before one of the other members awoke and ratted him out.
He snatched his bag and entered the cage, careful to lock it behind him. After all, if he did die in here, he'd rather Chester not get out and go after anyone else. The lion eyed him warily and Nevac did his best to appear as small and harmless as he could. He knelt by Chester's side and took in his running nose and red eyes, frowning as he carefully dug out a vial and his stethoscope.
"I need to collect a sample of mucus, and listen to your heart and lungs."
"You need a what?"
"He needs what's in your nose, you old fool!" Nico shot back from his cage and Chester growled at the tiger, shooting him a baleful look.
"It won't hurt at all!" Nevac assured him before the tension could get too high between the big cats.
"Fine. Be quick!" He tried to do as requested as best he could with shaking hands. He put his stethoscope on, frowning at the rattle that came through. After a moment he scooted away and set his things back in his bag.
"I'll send this to my buddy back in vet school, but I think you might have a cold, Chester." Nevac stretched his hand out and hesitated, yet when Chester made no move, he gently ran his fingers through his mane. "Once my friend confirms it, I'll get something to make you feel better." Chester rumbled beneath him, a cough erupting from him as Nevac pulled away
"Fine... Now get out so I can get some sleep." Nevac grinned and snatched up his bag to start towards the door. Maybe it was slow progress, but it was progress nonetheless and Nevac was grateful for every inch he moved.
