It all began, funnily enough, with a flower.

The narcissus, the most beautiful flower I had ever laid eyes upon. It seemed to call to me, and I was drawn to it like a fly to honey, but when I touched its tender petals my skin turned to ice. The earth began to rumble underneath my frozen feet and a chasm tore apart the lush field I had strayed into. A haunting chorus of moans emanated from the earth as if Hades itself was singing a death hymn. I stumbled back, the narcissus now forgotten, a scream held in my throat. I could faintly hear the calls of Cyane, but was unable to tear my eyes from the horrific form now emerging from the groaning chasm.

Cloaked in black, an imposing mountain of a man drive a chariot of wild horses from the depths of the earth. Their red eyes jolted my heart in fear; they bit against their tethers with frothed mouths. Inching backwards I attempted to run, but was unable to move more than a few quick steps.

The man in the chariot turned his gaze on me. The helm he wore anchored me in terror; it seemed to emanate a wave of terrible feelings, leaving me weak. Cyane's voice grew closer and I turned to her in panic, anxious to flee, but the chariot was upon me and large, forceful hands took me by my waist. I was quickly thrown over a broad set of shoulders as the chariot turned and raced back into the wide chasm in the field.

Being so near the helm left me paralyzed. Its effect was so strong my mind began to flood with thoughts of what my kidnapper was planning to do with me. My last thought before I lost consciousness was that my mater had been right about the world all along.

When I awoke, my surroundings surprised me. I had been expecting a cell or hole in the earth but instead I was slumbering in a grand four-poster bed, wrapped carefully in silken sheets. Although the room was dark, it was extravagant; jewels encrusted most of the furniture and fine decor adorned the walls. I quickly checked my body for signed of abuse but, aside from slightly tousled hair, I seemed unharmed.

Carefully, I set my bare feet upon the stone floor. It was cold, more so than I anticipated, and I retracted my feet quickly in surprise. A soft chuckle emanated from the corner and I whirled to face it, expecting my captor. Instead, a lone spirit greeted me.

"Good morning, my lady. I trust you rested well?" he asked, floating towards me. Despite his friendly appearance and calm tone, I rushed to my feet and began to back away. His smile fell slightly, but recovered after he bowed deeply. "Apologies, my lady. I should have realized you have probably never seen one of my... affliction before. I have come to check on your needs. Do you require anything? Wine? Breakfast, perhaps?"

"Where am I?"I nearly spat, anger beginning to bubble up my throat the longer the spirit spoke. He seemed slightly shocked at my question, as if I should have known.

"Why... you're in Hades, my lady. The kingdom of my Lord Plouton."

My heart stilled. I was... beneath the earth. Far from my mother. The Underworld.

The spirit cleared his throat, and I realized I had drifted off into my thoughts. Casting my gaze once again to his ethereal face, he spoke softly and moved slightly closer. "My lady... are you alright?"

"No." I replied bluntly, and turned from him. Tears burned my eyes and a chill erupted over my skin. I brought my hands to my face, shielding myself from the extravagant room and spirit servant. I heard nothing further and I sunk to the floor, losing myself in my sobs.

I would be another day before I received another visitor. At least, I assumed it had been a full day. It was difficult to tell under the earth. My room possessed no windows, but at certain hours there came a faint wailing in the distance from what I assume were other spirits here. I had also heard a mournful howl, not unlike a lost dog's cry. I attempted to sleep, but memories of the day before seeped into my mind and sent me nightmarish dreams.
