Sheva looks around,

The square, once lively and bustling with shopkeepers and patrons, is oppressively quiet. The shop fronts lay smashed and broken on the ground, destroyed beyond repair. The red dirt below Sheva's feet was littered with broken pottery, torn fabric and soaked with dyes, food and the blood of the shopkeepers that were merely setting up for the day that would never come.

In the distance Sheva sees a group of people huddled together. They aren't moving much; she steps forward, eyes intent on the group, so she doesn't notice the men guarding the openings into the alley ways and side streets until she gets closer. Until she sees the group in the very center of the square are hovering over someone.

Sheva's heart begins racing, and on either side of her she sees movement. Two Majini begin walking towards her, speaking very angrily in a language she doesn't understand. Their eyes are bloodshot and cloudy, and their clothes smeared with dried blood and dirt. She looks at these men with both fear and pity in her heart. They didn't ask for this, but they will do everything they are told nonetheless, and if they are even remotely conscious of their actions anymore they will go to their grave with their actions, however heinous, the last thing they remember. These poor people. One of them points to Sheva and shouts something, and the entire square erupts into screaming. The sudden noise startles her and she runs forward, towards the large group of men, all of whom are pointing at her and uttering strange words. The man in the front staggers forward two steps and her eyes catch sight of something on the ground.
Her stomach drops.
On the ground is her partner, bloody and beaten, visibly shivering, staring directly at her. His usual air of confidence and strength is replaced by wanton fear and defeat. Sheva feels a sharp pain behind her eyes at this sight, unsure of what to do.
As if he could read her mind, Chris shakes his head slowly and closes his eyes, bracing himself for the kick to his stomach Sheva didn't see coming. Curling further into the fetal position, Chris yanks the leg out from under the Majini in the front. "Sheva, run!"
Silence. The square was still, all eyes on Chris. Everything blurred together behind the tears in Sheva's eyes, but she was not leaving without her partner. She blinks the tears away and pulls her handgun from the holster, taking one step forward. She couldn't move any further. Two Majini had a tight hold on her arms and a third stepped in front of her, quickly disarming her and pointing her gun at her head.
"Let go of me, you bastards!" Sheva struggles against the stone grip on her arms, fighting through the intense pain of their fingers digging in deeper and deeper. "Chris! Chris, get up!"
The crowd of Majini turns to face her, and in the moment it took to shift, she caught a small glimpse of Chris. There was a Majini on top of him, his face only inches from Chris'.
"No! Don't you do it!"
The men let go of her arms and she runs towards Chris, bleary-eyed and frantic. They couldn't have... He's fine.
Sheva barrels through the Majini in her way and dives to the ground, her hands patting Chris down, feeling for warmth. Feeling for life. She reaches his holster and feels for his gun, clicks the strap open and continues her inspection. "Chris, I'm here. I'm here for you. Please open your eyes." She pleads, leaning in close to his face. It's bloody and bruised, his eyes are closed and she cannot feel breath coming from his nose or mouth.
"No! You can't leave me! Chris!"
Sheva begins sobbing, and grabs his hands and puts them on his chest, squeezing them softly. "I'm so sorry, Chris. I couldn't save you."
Deep, throaty laughter coming from behind the group surrounding the pair startles Sheva. A disembodied grunt is answered verbally by the entire group, and then by the group parting down the middle, revealing a much larger Majini sitting atop a metal barrel. He is very clearly the leader of this group; all of the other Majini look at him in an almost reverent manner. Sheva's heart flutters after the brief eye contact and looks down at Chris. He is motionless. Her heart rate increases exponentially and her ears begin ringing in response. Please, Chris. Wake up.
His finger twitches once, and then again. Some of the Majini shift their position, while some lean in closer. The large one slams his hand on his thigh twice and everyone backs up. Sheva pulls Chris' gun from his holster at the exact moment that he opens his eyes. Sheva stares down at his face; eyes that used to be full of life are now angry and bloodshot. She points the gun at his forehead, and he opens his mouth wide, growling at her. He reaches his hands up so fast she had no way to defend herself, and wraps his massive hands around her neck.
The pressure he applied instantly cuts off her ability to breathe, and she instinctively reaches for his hands to try to pry them off, even though she knows she couldn't if her life depended on it. And it did. His grip loosens just enough for her to gasp for air. Her eyes fill with tears and she takes a deep breath. I'm so sorry, please forgive me.
Sheva closes her eyes and presses the gun just below Chris's ear and, before she can change her mind, pulls the trigger.
The gunshot rings in her ear much longer than it should, and her surroundings fade away. The ringing continues, and Sheva opens her eyes and realizes the ringing was her phone. She rolls over and picks it up and her heart drops. Chris is calling her. Before she knows it she's pressed accept and brings it up to her ear. "Are you alright?"
For a moment, she hears nothing on the other end but feedback. His voice, trembling and deliberate, pierces through the silence. "Sheva, something... Something isn't right. I need to see you."
