you hadn't expected to see so much green, not here in the center of a long-deserted city; but weeds, they say, are resilient, and the cracks running through weathered concrete grow wider every year. picking your way through an abandoned steel shell of a building, you know it's too much to hope for a vine ripe with nuts or berries to suddenly appear in your path; you'd be grateful enough for a puddle of water to quench your thirst and wipe the caked dirt from your face. there's a dripping echoing from somewhere within the building -- faint -- but steady. water, you think, already feeling the sting subside from your sunburnt shoulders as you revel in the prospect of finding even the smallest bit to drink. it's hard to navigate the overgrowth but you press forward, driven both by the need for water but also by pure human curiosity. what else would you find, in this place that once was a man-made dwelling -- now devoid of any human influence, being slowly reclaimed by nature itself. you're too deeply entangled in the underbrush to notice the row of makeshift lamps, meticulously spaced out along the walls, which suddenly begin to flicker to life. and you're so busy freeing yourself from a briar patch that's hooked itself to your already-tattered backpack to realize you've been surrounded; shadowy figures lurking along the perimeter of the building, and slowly, slowly, closing in. "ahh--got you!" you shriek, voice echoing over and over into the dimly lit space as you finally yank yourself free of the thorns and stumble forward, barely catching yourself with your palms as you hurdle towards the ground. "damn vi--" you begin, but then stop short, mouth hanging open in stunned silence. you're not sure how many of them are -- you count 5, no 8, or is it actually 10? -- but you're surrounded on all sides by strange creatures ... animals, you suppose, although they're larger than you remember and don't look like any of the animals from the old books you'd scavenged. it's been so long since you've seen an animal up close. you scramble to reach for the knife in your backpack, knowing full well that if these creatures are hostile, a single dull knife doesn't stand a chance. most of them are your size, if not larger, and the way they've encircled you suggests some form of intelligence. "i-it's ok," you manage to croak out, holding up a hand as if to soothe the approaching creatures. idiot, you think to yourself, wild animals can't understand you. but somehow, the words comfort you, even if they might be your last. "i'm just a traveler, see?" you hold out the knife and then place it down in front of you, as if in offering. "i was just looking for water, i'm not here to hurt anyone..." you trail off. what's the use? you've quickly become this pack's prey. until -- "bring her to the great hall" -- a booming voice rings out, one which seems to come from everywhere and nowhere all at once. another person! you let out a shuddering breath, only just now realizing how badly you had been shaking. there's someone else here, you're saved -- you whip your head around wildly, trying to find whoever it is who had just spoken -- "i believe you're looking for me," the voice comes again, and suddenly, a shape looms over you, all blue and grey fur and eyes glinting gold. your breath catches in your chest, as if daring to even breathe might upset the creature, as you stare up -- it reminds you of the wild cats you had seen drawings of in the past, only this one seems larger, and staring at its fur is like staring into the night sky on the clearest of nights. "you're lucky," the cat-like creature says, and you started to wonder if dehydration is making you hallucinate. "if you had stumbled across any other packs, they may not have been so accommodating." the creature sits back on its hind legs and extends one giant paw towards you. "but we welcome travelers here." you aren't sure what to do next, but you reach out a trembling hand, letting your fingertips just barely brush against the fur of the paw. it feels oddly cool and softer than anything you'd ever felt before. and for some strange reason, a feeling of calmness settles over you. you're going to be alright. you're safe here. you didn't even know you had been searching for a specific place -- but now, you've found it.
