Humble Beginnings
Being a sky creature himself, it is no wonder that Kaneda loved the stars so much! When he was young he'd lie on a tall hill staring up for hours watching the twinkling lights, counting shooting stars, and admired the auroras as they rippled across the night sky. While it was thrilling to fly among the clouds, he longed to fly among the stars and planets out beyond in the same manner. He wanted to discover their names and learn each of their histories. He began studying all he could about astronomy to learn more about the frontier of space so that one day he could go visit those places himself.
At first he was somewhat bothered by the fact that he'd have to use a special suit to be out in space, or even when on many of the celestial bodies floating around out there. Granted, the suit gave him the protection needed to survive the harsh environments, but Kaneda yearned to stand freely on the moons and asteroids, as well as the atmospheric planets. He wanted to feel the dust covered surfaces with his bare scales and feel the solar winds brushing across his face. There were few planets that he could even walk without the need of the suit, and even fewer that held living creatures, but this didn't stop him from wanting to explore them all, barren and inhabited alike. He balked at travelling to space mainly because the spacesuits were so clumsy and it was such a chore to put on that often he'd miss those quick events simply because it took so long to get into the silly thing! Finally, after thinking it over a while, he concluded that wearing the cumbersome suit was better than not being there at all. At least he'd be able to get a lot closer to the celestial bodies he adored than by sitting safe at home peering at them through his telescope.
When he was old enough go live on his own, he managed to find small jobs working for both the local library and the planetarium. He knew both places so well from hanging around each so much as a youngster that it was inevitable he'd wind up working for each. While he loved working at both places, his eyes still kept lifting up to watch the starlit sky above. One day while working one of his library shifts, he was placing up some pamphlets on the community event board. One of the papers he was tacking up drew his attention with it's space themed advertising. Pausing, he stopped to actually read what he was putting up for once, and what he learned excited him. It was a call out to the public here on Subeta, inviting them to come up to Atebus to help populate a new area of Ziara city they had just finished building. That day he checked his savings and sure enough he had saved up enough Sp to move out there into a nice, albeit small, living unit.
After saying goodbye to the few folks he knew in Centropolis, he bought a seat on the shuttle to Atebus. He soon was all settled in and even found employment with the scientists working with the large observatory set up just down the tunnel from where he now lived. He was thrilled as he now could see more of his beloved stars than he could when back down on the planet. After several months he worked with glee, helping to discover new planets and galaxies. He also frequented the large library in the domed city, and soon absorbed whatever he could learn through the books & tapes there. One day while he was studying one of the older archives, he came across an article about Coda Cave Crystals.
Curious he tried seeking info on his own, but all he could ever find was that they were dug up from a special cave someplace here on the moon, and that they were connected to the space faeries. Unable to discover any more information than this on his own, he decided to ask about these special gems to one of his fellow workers at the telescope. She gave him a curious look and told him she found it odd he never knew. Smiling at his confused look, she proceeded to explain how every month there was a cave located on the other side of the moon. this cave was filled with various colours of those crystals. When the cave was opened, folks were permitted to come for a short while to dig for those special gems and were allowed to keep what they dig up. It was said that if a person managed to dig up enough crystals of each of the various colours, they'd be able to buy a special concoction from an old man who lived next to the caves, and be transformed into a creature that could travel around in space without a suit. As Kaneda listened he got more and more excited: this was his very dream! He was now determined to dig for those crystals even if it took his whole life!
Though the digging was only permitted at certain days each month, and only for a few hours at most he continued to labour hard. While he still worked at both his other jobs, he also continued to dig, never missing a single day permitted to be at the caves. After many months he managed to finally collect the last of the special crystals he needed to collect. That very day he cleaned himself off, went to visit Iltallo and received his blessed concoction from the old gypsy. Delighted, he drank it right down and watched as he truend from being just common, to now being one with the Galaxy! He was thrilled that he could now go out beyond the dome without needing that clumsy suit!
JARACHO
Jaricho has been Kaneda's best friend since far back as he could remember. While she too was as keen about the night sky as Kaneda was, her studies took her more into dimensional travel more than space travel. They would sometimes wind up competing in the science fairs against one another, and somehow they'd always wind up tying for first place... mainly because even though they were supposed to work on it separately, they still found time to help each other.Although they hardly see each other now face to face (usually only a few days during Luminaire, or during the Masquerade) they still send letters and chat via internet pretty much each week to keep in touch and share new discoveries from each other's work.
DROGE
Droge is pretty much Kaneda's little sister, since he was adopted by the same folks who raised her. She always treated him as family, never treating him anything more than the brother he was. She always loved hearing his tales about the sky and space, but her own love was for elemental magic, namely that of fire. Kaneda would bring her special stones and trinkets from his travels, and she would enchant many of them with her special abilities.Droge still resides in the same home from her childhood, and Kaneda always makes time to visit her often to be sure she is not lonely. He still finds small trinkets for her on occasion, and she still keeps a small bottle of wine set aside and ready for his each of visits.
BOLBARAY
Bolbaray is one of the schoolmates who hung around with Kaneda ever since he first saw him. Oddly, while Kaneda is always keeping his head to the skies, Bolbaray has always been drawn to the forests and the world they live on. Bolbaray is quiet, a little shy, but eager to help whenever it is needed. He manages to keep Kaneda from simply flying off into the unknown without first understanding what he's getting into.Pet Treasure
