About

Name: Navani Kekoa

Age: 32

Orientation: Biromantic Bisexual, female preference for both.

Occupation: Guard captain of Clan Vivere.

Appearance: A strong and imposing woman who boasts abundant strength, Navani is built for both offense and defense, easily able to dish out a punishment and steel herself against attack. Stocky muscles are kept strong from head to toe, especially in her upper body (think female boxers in build!). She has golden-tan skin criss-crossed with scars and tattoos alike, with ink littering her arms, torso, and back in a variety of patterns, some mixed with spell circles or runes. A defined crooked nose, rounded jaw and cheekbones, and playful almond-shaped caribbean-blue eyes give some softness to Navani, along with the lop-sided grin she often has on her lips. Her hair is long and thick, with a pronounced undercut and in mixed hues of dark turquoise fading to bright teal. Navani makes it a point to stand out in her clothing as well, often dressing in a variety of wrapped robe ensembles with sashes tied around her waist, and with various wooden jewelry, shells, or beadwork as accessories (some also sewn into her clothes). It isn’t uncommon to see her barefoot or in thin sandals, dressing in less practical garb than one might consider for a guard.

Personality:Vibrant and expressive, Navani is frequently found with a smile on her face and with joy in her step. A highly optimistic woman, Navani tries to find the silver lining in every situation and strive for the very best outcomes. Even if things don’t go well at first, she refuses to back down and give up, and is respected as an encouraging leader and warm friend to many. Often the type to chase after dreams rather than hold onto reality, Navani has tied herself down in more recent years to be less rebellious and be more down-to-earth. Evidence of a thrill-seeker and boisterous person still lingers in the way she throws herself into situations with vigor and challenges many conventional methodologies, but the woman does know the value of responsibility and will rarely shirk her duties. Just as hard-working as anyone else in the guard, she takes part in all aspects of clan duties despite her position, even in the lowest or most difficult of tasks. Her cheerfulness belies a fierce persona when needed, but Navani still seems to take things in stride and let stress roll off her back even at the worst moments. The guard knows well the difference between fun and ‘Navani’s fun’, especially since the woman loves gambling, bets, and has been known to pull a prank or two on others without a second thought. Banter and games are her absolute favorite, even if she can be a whiny, sore loser at times.

She does hold a lot of guilt for past events, and sometimes falters and shows a distant side to her, but it stems mostly from Navani’s worry about those close to her and her need to protect those around her. She frets that she isn’t able to always learn from mistakes, and that old habits will come back to haunt her. Her worst fear is being powerless, afraid to show moments of weakness in front of others lest she become unable to properly protect them. As courageous and diligent as she is, she never wants to let others down, and has problems with balancing the weight of adulthood and leadership with her independent will. Her son Naveed is her world, and she vows everything to him above anyone else—hurt him, and she will break your face.

Abilities: As a water witch, Navani has control over water spells, with a wide variety of skill in her repertoire. She can control most bodies of water up to decent-sized lakes in size, draw water from the ground with some concentration, and harness moisture from the air and clouds for her bidding. The tattoos on her body enhance her abilities, meant to ‘shorthand’ the need for spells or magical items, able to directly cast with ease.

Story

Born into Clan Vivere, Navani had a very warm and loving upbringing in the clan with her two siblings, the oldest between a brother and a sister. Her father kept a prominent position in the clan’s agricultural growth, a skill he learned from his father years before joining the clan. Her mother kept busy as a cartographer and geographer, helping in many ways to expand the clan’s borders and secure more land for their growth. Navani was enchanted at a young age with the stories that both of her parents had of life outside of the clan, growing up near the ocean and the freedom it entailed. It was ironic in how Navani developed magical tendencies towards water, reminiscent of her grandfather, a warlock himself with similar abilities. Easily accepted for her prowess in the clan, she was apprenticed by several witches and warlocks who guided her towards finding a path in the clan to follow.

Navani excelled in several aspects of her training, but had little drive to pick a solid calling for herself. Thoughts of something more lingered in her mind as she got older, and it was evident that ‘teenage rebellion’ was an understatement for the wanderlust that Navani developed. Her boredom with clan life made her completely unwilling to listen reason by her early twenties, skipping out on work to run off into the wilderness and breaking many clan rules along the way. This sparked heavy arguments with her parents, who couldn’t understand the severe change in Navani over time and who also worried about the destructive path she was heading down. Navani reached her breaking point at twenty-two, abruptly leaving the clan to strike out on her own and ‘find a better purpose for herself’. The bitter departure was something that the woman would later regret, but self-pride and perseverance kept her determined to see the world and find the adventure she desperately craved.

Culture shock hit the woman first, but Navani managed to make her way for several years in finding her dream, traveling constantly and seeking thrills wherever she could. ‘Try everything once’ became her mantra, which made her pick up several bad vices, including heavy drinking—consequences be damned. She often had little money to her name but managed often by either freeloading or odd jobs, content with the fast-paced life between cities. As much as she attempted to do so, she couldn’t escape reality for too long, and she came crashing down from cloud-nine when a few bad decisions left her destitute. With no belongings except the clothing on her back, no place to go, and pregnant from an embarrassing one-night stand too many, Navani forced herself to swallow her pride and go back to the clan, where things were not as she had left them before.

The news that her mother had died in the time that Navani had been away was the worst news she received, having been killed in a raid just six months previous. Deeply hurt by this turn of events, the woman fell into a deep depression, unable to accept her shortcomings for all of the trouble she had caused. It took a lot of soul-searching, forgiveness, and the birth of her son to steel Navani into vowing that she would do better for herself, for Naveed, and for her family, and be someone they could all be proud of. She threw herself into working as hard as possible to be a guard, impressing the clan elders so much with her tenacity and skill that they appointed her as guard captain at twenty-nine, with the stipulation that she be a positive, proper influence for future generations in the clan. Navani eagerly agreed, and continues to be an effective, organized leader for the guard.
