Story
Devien’s upbringing was modest, if typical for lower income families living in the rapidly industrializing cities growing heavily due to steam power. Despite having little to their name her parents tried their best for their children and Devien remembers her early years being fairly happy. At age eight her fire prowess was sparked out of the blue, a strange phenomenon considering the normal age for witches and warlocks discovering their abilities being in their early teenage years. Her parents, alarmed and terrified by the repercussions of having a magical child, sought to silently bury the idea of their child being different. Fear and superstition turned into drastic measures when they thought it best to end Devien’s life rather than allow such a black mark on their lives grow further, considering magic a curse. After attempting to slice her throat and failing, Devien was abandoned at a local hospital, surviving solely due to the clumsy nature of the wound and an outburst of Devien's fire that cauterized the area. It wasn’t enough to kill the girl but it caused irreparable damage to her vocal chords and serious mental trauma. Being cast off as such Devien was thrust into an orphanage when she was healed, later finding herself homeless due to overcrowding in the orphanage and its terrible living conditions. She was followed by several other children who wanted better as well, the ten-year-old Devien seemingly a better solution to their problems than living in destitution.Devien, with the help of her witch prowess and her quick wit, gathered the gang of children and set to thievery and small crime to make ends meet, enough to feed, clothe, and put a roof over their heads for many years. Devien instilled in the group a pact that they only use what was necessary for their survival while giving the rest to others, benefiting not only themselves but others less fortunate as well. The group became notorious for their acts wherever they traveled, more often for their charity and kindness than their crimes, but also for their inability to be caught. When Devien was in her teens she was approached with an opportunity for her group to earn more money and more stability -- an offer that seemed too good to be true, but was necessary for keeping her gang safe.
Little did Devien know that they would be working for a known crime syndicate in the country, dangerous even at the lower rung where she was involved. Devien and her gang ran errands and did odd jobs as requested. It paid enough that Devien took on a higher burden due to her magical advantage, which didn't go unnoticed by her employers. They pulled the teen aside and trained her in other fighting techniques with the intention to send her to complete more dangerous tasks. Devien was completely unaware that her bosses had little need for the rest of her gang at that point and were solely focused on her as an asset. This became evident when her gang was backed into a corner during one of their jobs and a rescue order came only for her. As desperately as Devien attempted to protect her friends several were injured, an event that sparked the young woman's need for revenge.
She devised a plot to gain the upper hand and leave a mark on the crime syndicate that they would remember. Devien systematically burned their warehouses, supplies, and offices before hunting her employers down and killing them. Her final act was sabotaged by the police, who followed the trail of destruction that Devien left in her wake. She was apprehended after a harsh fight, leaving several officers dead and Devien thrown into prison. There she was held in the worst of conditions, subject to a justice system that severely punished the worst of crimes and denied trials in secret to those they kept out of the public eye. Various torture methods were used on the young woman who resisted at first, but found herself weak from the abuse over time, left trying desperately to survive. Devien endured many months of this treatment before she managed to escape, a feat which she can barely remember, let alone explain. She laid low in order to recuperate for a time and trying to decide her next moves. Having no idea of her gang's fate and assuming them dead or also in prison, Devien fled the city as a fugitive and wandered in search of a place to hide where no one would find her.
Stumbling upon Vivere was sheer chance, with Devien on her last leg suffering from starvation and exhaustion at the mercy of the clan. Despite being hostile to the guard she was allowed in only when she passed out at the gates, unaware of where she was. Held in isolation until she recovered, Devien was allowed residency on a trial period at the cost of being conscripted into the guard. She continued her hostility towards everyone in the clan, speaking to no one at first until she was slowly coaxed out of her shell by a single nurse at the hospital. Devien was hesitant towards Precious at first, the woman being the only one who paid her constant attention and gentle care, going out of her way to ensure Devien's acceptance into the clan. Her visits to the clan's hospital are frequent enough to spend ample time with Precious, especially at the hand of her assigned mentor in the guard, Luvinie. The pair are constantly at each others' throats due to Devien's abrasive nature and Luvinie's short fuse and lack of patience. Their strife is amplified by the increasingly close relationship that Devien develops with Precious, kindling an unexpected romance between the pair. This helps in taming Devien some, smoothing the prickly edges of her personality and allowing the witch to express herself more fully. She still fears her past, however, and hesitates to call Vivere home, worrying that she might have to escape if her actions come back to haunt her. Devien is willing to give her all to preserve what happiness has, but she isn't sure she's worth the trouble and the risk her presence poses to the clan -- and to those she cares for.
