The liquid's colour changed in the the tiny test tube as she'd predicted. She now added a drop of the enzyme and gently swirled it around, noting a small change to the minuscule ball in the bottom of the tube. Reaching down without taking her eyes off the tiny ball she grabbed a hypodermic needle from the tray in front of her. Slowly, carefully, she lowered the needle through the liquid toward the ball. The tip touched the ball. There! Now to extract the cells she needed. Just... a bit... further...

RIINNNNGGGGG!

Startled by the loud ring, her hand jerked slightly and the entire tube shattered. Furious, she threw the remains of her experiment down onto the work tabletop and stormed over the the still loudly ringing telephone, lifted the receiver and screamed into the phone.

"What! Didn't I tell you to never call me while I'm..." she paused a few seconds. "Oh... hello, Mom." she replied in a more neutral... and lower... tone of voice. She rolled her eyes and wiped her hands absently on her labcoat as her mother continued speaking.

"Yes, dear, that's why I called you. You're always too busy or some such nonsense. Besides, I'm your mother and I don't count. Anyways... I called to remind you... about tonight?"

"Remind me? Remind me of wha... oh... blast! That." She sighed loudly into the phone. She'd completely forgotten that she'd promised her mother she'd come for a visit. "Come on, Mom! You know I'm so busy lately with the new experiments... these things take time to get right! You can't just..."

"But dear," her mother interrupted. "It's been ever so long since your last visit here. My gosh it's been what, almost a year now? And you know how we both worry about you, what with all those strange... things you make. Goodness, what if one was to actually hurt you... or worse? I mean really, dear couldn't you have just stuck with making those interesting explody thingies and..."

"Mom... those were atom bombs. And I finished those several months back. I even have them set up already. I thought you knew!"

"Well... not really, dear. You don't really talk much about your work, at least not with your father and I. Oh, whatever... as long as you're happy I guess. Anyways... about tonight. Your father will be sending the car around for you at 7pm sharp! And please, remember to change your clothing! The last time you nearly frightened the waitresses with that stained labcoat! I had to tell them it was spilled hot sauce before they'd come anywhere near our table! I don't think they really believed me, but..."

"Wait, wait... Mom!! NO! I thought this time we'd agreed; no restaurants! You know I don't like being in those types of places. They make me... well... uncomfortable!" she protested, shuddering at the memory of the last time she had to suffer through an evening out.

"Oh come now dear, it really isn't that bad. You make it sound like it's a horrible chore! It's your birthday after all. We always do something special for you every year, you should remember! Now, be a good girl and wear that lovely suit Daddy bought you last Christmas, won't you? The darling green one that so matched your eyes?"

She sighed again. There was just no getting out of it... she'd have to go out and face the world with a smile instead of a flame throwing mechnoid. "Okay, okay, Mom... I'll be sure to change... see you at 7... yes, I love you too." She continued to listen as her mother rambled on about wearing a sweater and putting on clean underwear. After several more minutes of maternal advise her mother made kissy-kissy noises into the phone and finally hung up. She glanced over at the clock to see it was almost 5:30pm. Less than 2 hours to get ready. She knew was not going to be able to get the experiment started again in such little time.

She closed her eyes, pinched the bridge of her nose, and sighed in exasperation. She'd even forgotten it was her own birthday... not that it really mattered. All days were the same to her. Straightening up, she sighed again and headed for the secret elevator to the upper floor. She'd better go shower and change like her mother wished. The things she did just to keep her wealthy parents happy. It was so hard to be a mad scientist now-a-days.

This creature of the air and space sure knows how to keep one like me grounded... for that I am grateful!
