"Addie! Come down and clean the kitchen! We have company coming over soon!" Jayden yelled from the bottom of the stairs. Addison Coak poked her head out from her small closet-sized bedroom. Her bushy blond-haired older brother was standing at the bottom of the stairs, his green eyes glinting in the stray beam of sunlight that came from the window. She rolled her turquoise eyes and came out of the room. Jayden gave a satisfied smile and it made Addison smile in return. His smiles always made her smile too. But who was coming?
Addison skipped a couple steps in going down the flight. She landed at the bottom with a bob of her autumn hair and smiled to see Jayden on the floor, scrubbing it. The orange and white tiles were oh so tacky, but their mother insisted on keeping them when they bought the house. Their parents were in love with that house, or at least their mom was. Owning lakefront property was always her dream. Addison and Jayden personally loved it because of the surrounding woods. Oh, right, that's who was coming.
Addison and Jayden's dad worked for a house-building company, but they focused mainly on wood from trees. His bosses, the owner and co-owner of the business were coming for dinner. Their dad's main focus was getting a raise and becoming third-in-command. In order to gain their attention and respect, he had cut down a good part of the trees that surrounded the quaint cottage on the skirts of Veta Lake. Jayden was the one who was most upset about all of this; he had fought with their dad night and night again. Addison was a little embarrassed by her brother's reaction, but it was all in good reason. Why would you want to kill those innocent trees? They had so many creatures within their branches and roots. To kill the trees meant to kill them.
Addison lowered herself to the ground and started scrubbing along with her brother. The dirt and grime transferred from the floor to the sponge, and from there into the bucket of dirty water. Addison sighed and looked at Jayden. "How are you coping?" She asked, sympathy filling her gaze.
"Oh, you know, I'm still pissed. But I'm going to behave for dad's executives." When he said those words, he winked.
"What are you thinking?" Addison narrowed her eyes, wondering what could be going through this boy's head. To mess with dad's executives meant to mess with their life as was currently. She sighed and figured she'd ask the question bobbing around in her head. "Do you want me to help? Addison asked, putting the sponge down.
"Well, of course, sis! I was hoping you'd ask," Jayden replied, putting his sponge down too. He took Addison's hand and led her out the kitchen doors into the backyard. "They won't know what hit them."
