Jayden Coak remembered very clearly the night his father told him and Addison what he planned to do. They were sitting in the living room, watching TV. Jayden was sitting with one leg across the couch and one hanging off of it. He had a bag of organic potato chips on the coffee table next to him and he was eating them unmercifully. His blonde hair was neat, as always, and his green eyes followed the characters on the screen back and forth. He'd laugh a couple times and then crunch on a potato chip. Addison was on the love seat sitting Indian-style, reading a book. Her brown hair was tied in a loose ponytail and she had her brown Gucci glasses on; she only wore them when she was reading.
They both heard the heavy footsteps of their not-too-slim father. The siblings looked up simultaneously and noted the look on Mr. Coak's face. It was serious, with a horrible attempt at being soft. Jayden frowned and put a half-eaten potato chip back in the bag. This could be anything but good. "Dad, what's up?" Jayden asked with narrowed eyes.
Mr. Coak gave his son a look and sighed, sitting on the recliner slowly. The room was so silent that you could hear a pin drop. And, you could hear Mr. Coak's back crack as he sat down. Addison winced and went back to her book. Jayden looked at his dad with the same look as before. He raised his eyebrows as if asking the same question as before. Mr. Coak sighed and shook his head. But, oddly enough, he was smiling. "Well, I have good news," He rumbled in his gravelly voice.
Jayden breathed a sigh of relief, and even Addison looked a little more relaxed on the love seat. But Jayden had spoke too soon. "My executives are coming over for dinner tomorrow! Isn't that wonderful? I'll finally have a chance to prove to them that I can be third-in-command. I simply can't wait!" Mr. Coak grinned at his children and stood up, leaving the room.
Addison looked over at Jayden with a look of worry. "If dad gets the job, that won't be good, will it?" It was more of a confirmation than a question.
Jayden didn't answer straight away, but he nodded solemnly after a few minutes. "Yah...if he gets that job the woods around our house will just be a memory. We can't let this happen!!" Jayden slammed his hand against the couch. He sat up straight and took the half-eaten potato chip out of the bag, crunching it pensively. "I'll think of something, Addie. Just give me some time..."
Addison shrugged and went back to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Who knows, maybe he would have a plan?
