He had been so excited to accompany his parents on this expedition to Nonataq, the vast iceland far north of his home city of Thenes, the capital of the temperate and benign country of Mora. He had studied extra hard with his tutors and had even learned a bit of the native Inuuk language, although certainly not as much as his father who had made several trips to the border villages in Nonataq for the past few years. Even now his father, broad shouldered and smiling, was chattering away tirelessly with one of the local excavators while he and his mother sat snugged together in one of the fur covered sleds of the caravan that would be taking them back to one of the border villages for their departure back to Mora.

He honestly was somewhat disappointed with the month spent in the icelands. His father had often been away monitoring the progress and workers in the mines and his mother had been oddly aloof and fidgety. He knew that she was worried about his little brother, who had been left in the care of the nannies back home, but that didn't seem to be all that was bothering her. He had asked her once, what was upsetting her so and she simply cast her dull eyes upon his face and sighed,
"There's just not enough life here, I suppose. No flowers, no shoots, nothing grows."
She then patted him gently on his cheek and suggested he go ice fishing for a while with some of the Inuuk children.

Now they sat together, awaiting his father so that the three sleds could finally get moving. He thought he heard the driver of their sled murmur something about the danger of travelling at night when at long last his father came and peeked in on his son and wife.
"Taking good care of your mother for me Boreus?" his father asked warmly.
The boy nodded and grinned, anxious to finally be going home. His father hopped into the sled in front of theirs and with a shout the caraven was off.

Boreus was half asleep when the first frightened scream came from up ahead. He was wide awake by the time the scream sputtered out in a strangled gurgle.
"Nawnak!" came the warning cry from up ahead, just as a thunderous roar rang out from the darkness, accompanied by a volley of yips and howls from the sled dogs. Boreus' eyes flew open in terror. The nawnak was a huge ice bear spoken about by the villagers all over Nonataq. There weren't many of them, but they still prowled the inland glaciers at night to feed. Their hunger was difficult to sate and their claws were venomous, often used as defense against some of the more dangerous sea creatures that lurked in the deeper of the bears' feeding grounds. Very few people ever survived an encounter with a nawnak. Suddenly the immense creature came out of the darkness, it's muzzle dripping crimson, the flesh of both sled dog and Inuuk dangling from it's claws. It took a swipe at the sled, overturning the basket and severing the traces and releasing the dogs. Boreus scrambled free and rose to his knees, coming face to face with the nawnak. It snarled and raised it's paw. Boreus cringed and was thrown backwards as his mother dove on top of him, knocking him out of the way. The tips of the giant bear's claws grazed Boreus' shoulder before catching purchase in his mother's hooded coat. He screamed in despair as she was yanked, sobbing, into the darkness and then turned and looked at the only cover he had in the middle of nowhere - the overturned sled. He could feel the venom from the claws of the bear burning through his blood as he burrowed through the snow and back under the sled where the air was warmer and the space insulated from the furs. He huddled into a ball and fought to keep still, though his entire body felt like it was on fire. It spread in strange indigo spirals along his increasingly whitened skin, spreading even into the whites of his eyes as they finally slid shut in exhaustion.

A search party came out the next day with little hope of finding anything besides leftover supplies. The sled dogs that had escaped the bear had made it to the closest village and there had been sightings of a nawnak a few days before. The spatters of gore clinging to the coats of the dogs left little doubt in the villagers minds, but they sent out a party anyway. If nothing else they might be able to salvage some dried meat or some furs to help them through the fast approaching winter. A collective gasp went through the group of Inuuk men when they flipped the overturned sled and saw the boy, stark white with strange, dark, rigid markings etched underneath his skin. His eyes fluttered and his breath rattled in his throat, but he was still alive. The eldest of the men, stern and scarred, recognized the signs of poison and infection and told the others to take the boy back to the village healer. His own son had died long ago and if this child was strong enough to survive, the elderly man would be sure he had a place to call home.

Some say the world will end in fire,Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desireI hold with those who favour fire. But if it had to perish twice,I think I know enough of hateTo say that for destruction iceIs also greatAnd would suffice.
