The neighbors usually made it a point to avoid the local women of ill-repute, but a crying child, on the other hand...
The infant Isatis was swaddled and passed around the tenement to whoever could afford to feed and clothe him at the timeuntil he grew to an age where he could take care of himself. And so, at eight years old, he was kindly turned out with a threadbare change of clothes, a sleeping rolland a few copper coins, in hopes that he'd live to adulthood.
Being an optimistic and playful child, Isatis quickly fell into a gang of street smart thieves and easily mastered the tricks of every aspect of the trade. Pickpocketing, shoplifting, long cons: anything short of harming another person. Isatis became a shadow, absconding with priceless art and jewels, making off with pocket watches and money clips, smooth talking business men out of piles of cash, all the while remaining comfortably, curiously anonymous.
Until he found Mariah.
A fellow orphan, street dweller and thief, Isatis was swept away by her fiery personality and reckless finesse. The two became an inseparable team, leading Isatis to cut ties with his old gang in order to follow along in Mariah's magnetic wake. The couple completed heist after heist, taking the city by storm and amassing a treasure trove of gilded trinkets and artifacts in their hideout in one of the city's forgotten catacombs. And so it was, that the two were walking through the streets one evening, cold fingers entwined, eyes squinted against the pouring rainwhen Mariah's sight settled upon a lone diamond ring, forgotten in a jeweler's display window.
"That's the ring you should give to your wife," she hinted teasingly.
Isatis, caught in the thrill of Mariah's emerald gaze, grinned in return and knelt to pry a loose cobblestone from the street. Standing upright, stone in hand, he winked at his lover, hurled it through the window and reached to pluck the ring from the shards of shattered glass.
As he closed his fist around the ring, a hard hand clamped down around his wrist. Mariah shrieked in surprise from behind him. For the jeweler had remembered the forgotten ring as he was closing his vault and had come running when he heard the glass break. Isatis, for the first time in his career, felt the fear of being caught. Desperately he yanked his arm free and whirled around, taking Mariah's hand and pulling her away down the street. The jeweler shouted after them, calling for the police as he himself took chase.
The pair bolted through alleyways, nearly blinded as the storm clouds covered up the moon and the rain lashed violently across their faces. They emerged from between two buildings and stumbled out onto the street in front of a lone horse-drawn carriage. Just then, lightening arched across the sky, followed by a splitting thunder clap. The horses reared and the carriage tipped, crashing down on the two young thieves.
When Isatis pulled himself from beneath the rubble, he was dizzy and hurt from several gashes and a large pulsing knot on his temple. But nothing matched the pain in his heart when he saw his dear Mariah, lying still, eyes glazed, crushed from the waist down under the collapsed body of the carriage. He bent over to touch her white lips, a wave of dizziness and nausea nearly overtaking him, before the sound of the police siren caught his attention. With every thread of his being in agony, he turned and fled into the darkness, still clutching the diamond ring in his hand.
The warmth of the sun awakened him and he found himself sprawled out on a broad marble doorstep. Just then, the dark mahogany door swung inward and a pale man with faint scars along his jaw and neck stepped out, accompanied by, surprisingly enough, a large shaggy wolf. He gazed calmly down at the young man bleeding on his doorstep and pushed his spectacles up the bridge of his nose.
"Seems our morning walk will be a bit delayed, old friend," he murmured to the wolf as he bent down to examine his new boarder.
