The Nightsteed is indeed an apparition of the night, with a soul as black as the sky through which he gallops. Perhaps his black soul is why he is drawn to the SoulFinder, whose job it is to send tormented souls into the beyond.

Aeons ago, the SoulFinder and the Nightsteed's paths crossed. Carrying out her duty as she had done for an eternity, the SoulFinder began the ritual to release the Nightsteed's soul. However, he chose instead to stay with her and roam the lands together. They have never been parted since this fateful day, when the very fabric of time snagged and ripped, such was their combined power.

The Nightsteed is the only tormented soul the SoulFinder has not released, for they have been together so long that their spirits are entwined. Doubtless, if the Nightsteed's soul was to be sent beyond the SoulFinder too would perish.
