She is an angel, to put it in simplest terms. She is bound to be only a caregiver, a guide, to others in the Eldetia realm. She is not allowed to keep friends, spouses or even pets, her duty is that of solitude. She prays to the spirits of the realm to keep them at bay. When she isn't in her temple, she is guiding residents along their path, much like a guardian angel. She does this all during the night, and prays during the day. Her life is lonely. Her work is lonely, as she is not permitted by her contract to speak to those she guides, only to nudge them in the right direction. She has not uttered a word in years, it feels like. Chrysalis longs for the day she is unbound from her duty, but knows it will never come. You see, as a baby she was given to the temple as a peace offering by two criminals, begging for their lives. The current temple keeper and guardian angel took the young Endeavor into her wings and taught her the ways of the temple. When the keeper passed on, Chrysalis took her vow out of obedience and love for her teacher. She didn't have much of a choice, however. Once her birth parents had given her up they had tied her fate as well, as the spirits would be outraged if she were to avoid becoming the next temple keeper. So, she is stuck; either stay a guardian angel for the rest of her life, to keep the spirits happy, or attempt to run away from it, putting all of Eldetia in danger of their might.
