Dawn on the primordial prairie...
As the sun rises on the arid scrubland of the Berriasian Cretaceous, many creatures awaken to begin another day of survival in an environment proving challenging at best. A chorus of pterosaurs soars above the plains, squawking their distaste for one another as they bicker over hunting and scavenging grounds. Swooping and pecking at the wings of their brethren, they attempt to establish a small territory of their own for feeding. Many feeble attempts of dominance are made in vain, as more pterosaurs flock to the racket hoping to steal an easy meal.Gazing up at this almost petty display is a small dinosaur, only about fifty centimetres tall, but with a long tail, allowing her to reach nearly two meters in length. Standing proudly on her two hind legs, she is a theropod, belonging to a large group of dinosaurs known for their hollow bones, three-toed feet and bipedal stance. Aristosuchus pusillus, or "bravest little crocodile". Ironically this dinosaur is largely avian in appearance, sporting a striking coat of short, off-white feathers with black striping. Her eyes a bright blue with flecked yellow, fixated on the squabbling fliers above, framed with a vibrant red mask of skin that signifies her maturity. She sniffs at the air, a dry, warm scent is carried on the breeze, along with something intriguing. Something edible. Losing all interest in the circling pterosaurs, her head darts to the ground, snuffling along the dusty plains in search of her breakfast.
While curious by nature, this pearly dinosaur has not survived this long from naivety and carelessness. She is still a cunning predator, albeit a small one. Catching a strong whiff of the aroma, she hones in on an unlucky lizard scuttling among the ferns and shrubbery. Camouflage is handy in this environment, however, it is no match for the keen eyes and sensitive nose of the Aristosuchus, who creeps up on the unsuspecting reptile in near silence. One small, well-placed step at a time, she proceeds with a steady head and ready to- SNAP! An unfortunate morning for an early lizard, and a delicious, protein-rich breakfast for our Pearl.
