Diamonde

(Dye-mond)
The Galactic Kora
Owner - Kaylene

some are satin, some are steel

some are silk and some are leather
they're the faces of the stranger
but we love to try them on

Poised, elegant and sophisticated, Diamonde is a true lady. Always well groomed and graceful, and sporting the loveliest accessories, an observer may at first glance imagine her to be somewhat snobbish. In fact, this couldn't be further from the truth - for all her aristocratic mannerisms, Diamonde truly cares for those close to her and is a generous, giving spirit toward those in need. She may not like to get her paws muddied but she will always go the extra mile for a friend or family member and is extremely protective. She is one of the more mature of her owner Kay's family - as long as maturity doesn't involve her having to get her perfect fur dirty.

Diamonde, like so many other naturally Galactic pets, was born in the Coda Caves on Atebus. Diamonde grew up surrounded by the shy and reclusive native Galaxan peoples, who so resemble fairies. She was a particular favourite of Iltallo and spent much of her childhood by his side. Iltallo considered himself her guardian and wished to protect her from the corruption he saw in the world. Diamonde, however, possessed a powerful curiosity about the outside world the others shunned. Her absolute favourite times growing up were when the Coda Caves were opened to curious humans, eager to mine gems and sometimes to have their pets blessed by wise old Iltallo and changed Galactic themselves. The charming young Diamonde would beg these visitors for tales of the world of Subeta and especially the cities, which she imagined to be marvellous places of colour, culture and light. As she matured, Diamonde came to realise she could never spend the rest of her life sequestered within the Coda Caves. Though Iltallo was initially resistant, Diamonde's persistent cajoling and whining wore him down over time. (Diamonde knew her whining was irritating enough to grant her almost anything she wished.) Eventually, with a sad farewell to Iltallo, she set off toward Ziara to experience the city herself.

When Diamonde first arrived in Ziara she had little idea what to do. She had some money, given to her by Iltallo in an attempt to keep her fed and safe for at least a while, however no hotel would give her a room to stay in. A single pet all alone in a large city where most had owners was uncommon to say the least. Nobody seemed willing to risk giving board to what may be just a stray. By the end of her first day, a weary, footsore Diamonde curled herself onto a decorative bench outside a rather lovely accessory shop. Distressed, defeated and close to tears, Diamonde had resigned herself to the reality that she may well be sleeping on the bench that night when a richly dressed old lady opened the door of the shop and beckoned Diamonde inside.

The kind old lady offered Diamonde a place to stay with her, in return for helping run the store. Diamonde accepted with delight, thinking the little accessory shop to be one of the loveliest places she'd ever seen. Such beautiful little trinkets it had! The old lady, who went by the name of Rose, had been a wealthy socialite in her younger days and the store was a classy one which appealed to all manner of well-bred people. Rose taught Diamonde how to behave like a lady, to speak with elegance and sit with poise, to act with grace and charm and never to offend or behave rudely. Diamonde lapped up the attention that was showered upon her by the store's clientele, though the sense of humility instilled in her while growing up with Iltallo ensured she never let it go to her head. But beyond all the mannerisms and social graces, the most important thing Rose taught Diamonde was to always be kind and always be generous. The time Diamonde spent with Rose was heavenly, however such good things never do last all that long.

Rose was a sprightly old lady, but she was old, and age has a way of taking people from us. Rose passed away quietly one day, leaving Diamonde alone with a broken heart full of grief. Not wanting to return to the Coda Caves, Diamonde refused to leave the apartment she had shared with Rose until a few concerned officials eventually came and took her away. Diamonde could not bring herself to care where they were taking her. She heard a few mentions of Delphi Beach and an adoption centre but she paid little attention, numbed as she was by the loss of someone so dear to her. She hardly noticed when she was placed in a little pen on her own, a single cushion and blankets folded in a corner. A chest full of belongings Rose had given her was placed inside, along with her little Minion, a Lew Lew Duck she had named 'Petite'. Diamonde simply curled herself into a ball and drifted into sleep with her tears.

Over the next few weeks, Diamonde came to understand where she was and why she was there. The knowledge simply depressed her even more and the once spirited Kora became a shadow of her former self. The gloomy figure hunched in the corner of her pen didn't really appeal to any humans looking to adopt a new pet. Diamonde refused to go out into the sun with the rest of the abandoned pets, simply lying in her pen and eating only when her body forced her to. Each day blurred into the next and Diamonde began to feel as though she would fade away there until one morning a loud, shrill voice startled her out of her apathy.

"Hey! Hiya! Why are you so sad? I mean, I guess you're sad, you look sad. You should smile more you know, because you're not gonna be in here forever! Maybe if you smile then someone'll adopt you. 'Cause you're pretty and - oooooooh, wow, you have a Lew Lew Bell! They're so pretty! All I have is an Axolytl..."
The voice belonged to a Specturm Jollin who had managed to force almost her entire head into Diamonde's pen. She looked up at Diamonde with wide pink eyes. Diamonde was too startled to speak, however for the first time in months she was alert. The Jollin grinned at her.
"What's your name? I'm Dotti. I was here once too, well, a few times actually 'cause I kept escaping since I liked living by myself on the beach better but last time I was here Kay adopted me and now I live with her!" The Jollin spoke very fast and Diamonde actually felt a smile flit quickly across her face at her antics.

A pale blue Glade Legeica came and nudged the Jollin away from Diamonde, scolding her in a quiet voice. She turned to Diamonde.
"Sorry..." She said softly, with a small apologetic smile. "Dotti's like that all the time, I hope she didn't bother you..." Diamonde shook her head.
"No, she didn't, she... She cheered me up a little." Diamonde smiled genuinely at the Legeica, who sat down in front of her pen. When the Legeica asked Diamonde how she came to be here Diamonde told her, grateful for a kind and understanding ear. Telling her story helped ease a lot of the pain, she realised, and she felt at peace. For the first time, a desire to leave the miserable pen she was in rose to the surface. She decided she was definitely going to ask to have lunch out in the sun today when a lady carrying the hyperactive Jollin came and put her hand on the Legeica's head.
"Who's your friend, Shylah?"
The lady was unlike anything Diamond had ever seen. She resembled a living statue and she smiled at Diamonde, who inclined her head in politeness.
"I am Diamonde, pleased to make your acquaintance. I hope I haven't held any of you up?" The lady laughed in delight at this.
"So polite! You could teach my lot a thing or two! I'm Kay, pleasure to meet you Diamonde."
The Legeica, Shylah, lifted her head and whispered into Kay's ear. Kay nodded.
"I think so too, Shy. Say Diamonde, would you like to come with us? Shylah and Dotti like you and we'd love for you to join us."
Diamonde couldn't believe her fortune. She accepted at once and from that day forward she considered Kay her owner.

Diamonde has never forgotten Rose and Kay takes her to Atebus each year to place flowers on the grave of the first lady who gave her a home. However, to say that Diamonde loves living with Kay would be an understatement. Kay considers Diamonde her 'diamond in the rough', Diamonde's high cultured mannerisms and turn of phrase being so different from the rest of her eclectic family. Diamonde herself has become much like she was on Atebus before the death of Rose, friendly, charming and enthusiastic toward life. With the bonds she's formed with many of her 'siblings', Diamonde is happier now then she's ever been.
