"...Merryweather?"
The little chai turned over underneath her quilt, and blinked a few times until her vision adjusted. It was very dark in the room, and darkest of all in the corner near the door. The darkness moved towards her bed. The little lovebirds in the corner tweeted once, and were silent.
"There isn't anything there, Hrafn. Solar Moon's up, and she would have heard something."
The nightmare irion turned his head to preen his feathers anxiously. "You're sure, Merry? You're sure she's up?"
Merryweather rubbed a small paw into her eyes and turned her pillow over.
"I'm sure. Atebus is dark tonight; she told me it's a good night to see the early meteors."
The darkness had physical weight and warmth as it pressed down on the end of her bed. Hrafn settled himself there, but he was almost vibrating with tension.
Merryweather lifted the edge of her quilt, and eased out a couple of plushies to make a space in her bed. They thumped lightly on the floor as they landed. Unlike Hrafn, who never made a sound.
"Come and lie down, there's a love. Try to get some rest. It'll be dawn soon enough."
He settled his feathery back tight against her furry one, and she felt him let out a deep sigh. Faint wisps of nightmare moved in the air near her, but she ignored them. She reached her paw to the wall above her bed and felt for her dreamcatcher. It was there. And there was nothing in the night darker and more terrible than this brother beside her. They would be fine. They were always fine.
"I'm sorry, Merry. I'm sorry I woke you again."
Her voice was soft, comforting, and just a little sleepy.
"That's what sisters are for."

Merryweather is well-named, for she is the sunniest of all her adopted siblings. Kind, gentle and always ready with a funny word and a warm smile, she is the fulcrum around which the life of the house pivots. Her steady, down-to-earth nature and her pragmatism make her invaluable in a home full of the unexplained and the inexplicable. Whilst Notorious Lightning keeps his head in his books and his opinions to himself, Paradise Circus lays joyous rainbow waste to the home, and Liberty Theatre just frightens Hrafn out of his wits, Merryweather bakes, tidies, counsels and generally keeps the home ship sailing. She has the knack of always being just there when she's needed, usually with a cookie, a hug, and plenty of time to listen.
She loves to bake, to draw and to craft. She's never seen without something in her deft little paws, working busily away. All summer long she bakes the fruits (and vegetables) of Florabundance's labours in the garden into delicious treats that even Hiberner Toujours shows enthusiasm for, and all winter she quilts to keep everyone warm and cosy, singing along with her little lovebirds whilst she does. It was Merryweather who made the dozens of dreamcatchers that surround Hrafn's bed, and Merryweather who offered to share her big, light room with him when his fear of the darkness and himself grew too strong for him to spend the nights alone. Merryweather's room is full of books, drawings, comics, crafty bits in pretty jars and her enormous collection of lovingly-repaired vintage plushies. Little Faith once asked her why she preferred these old, worn toys to new ones. Merryweather simply replied that things mean more the more that they have been loved, and Little Faith understood completely.
Merryweather herself is the most loved of all her siblings. Their rivalries and irritations never make it as far as her; she is the peacemaker and the mediator. It is Merryweather who ensures this strange yet fiercely loyal family are able to stay together; even when Notorious Lightning has to work all night and Paradise Circus won't stop trying to make a spectrum trail all the way down the stairs; when Florabundance comes in from the garden and accidentally wipes mud on Hiberner Toujours' white plumage yet again; when Solar Moon is trying to observe constellations for her project and Santa Clara's ghostly entourage keep flying past the windows. In Merryweather's gentleness there is a deceptive strength, for she is at heart the most resilient of them all; the glue that binds them together.
Pride of place on Merryweather's bedroom wall goes to what is, frankly, a terrible picture. Craft paper, finger paints, sequins and enough glitter for a whole Lumineve make up Paradise Circus' portrait of his favourite sister. The general outline of "chai" can be detected, and a huge smile, but not much else. She is shown holding an enormous pink heart with the word "LOVE" daubed across it.
All of her siblings have commented how, somehow, the painting is just like her.
