Notorious Lightning was born in an anarchy of colors with a rioter's name, and grew into a soft-spoken, shy librarian. Introspective to a fault, Notorious Lightning is never happier than when with his nose in a fantasy novel, dreaming of being the kind of swaggering, sword-wielding hero he would cross the street to avoid in real life. He studied anxiously for his interview to work at the library. The first time he went to the job agency, his paws shook and he could hardly stutter out his desire to be taken into gainful employment. Ever since he was a growing cub, he felt the weight of others' expectations on him to study hard, work hard and do well. Notorious Lightning was never certain he could do anything well, but the need to prove himself and give peace to his own inner critic never left him. Librarian was a job he knew he could do, and wanted to do. He wanted the chance to - in his own shy and quiet way - share his love of reading and learning with others. He hoped to find kindred spirits working there; although much (and demonstratively!) loved by his adopted siblings, Notorious Lightning always finds it hard to join in with their more riotous bonding and always seems to find him sitting on the sidelines, watching, and occasionally tentatively offering safety advice to Paradise Circus. He was distraught to be rejected after his first interview. He stayed shut in his room for two days, despite all the comforting notes Little Faith slipped under his door, until Hiberner Toujours - taciturn as ever - shouldered open the door and dropped a small and pretty confused Arianta on the floor without further explanation. Notorious Lightning's whole heart went out to the sweet, gentle little minion and he was swiftly and appropriately christened Matisse. Matisse never leaves Notorious Lightning's side, and the normally fastidious Kumos never seems to mind the occasional little slime trail on his precious books. With the gentle support of Matisse and the raucous, yet loving, positivity of his siblings - as well as Little Faith's "lucky ghost pencil" which he was prevailed upon to keep - Notorious Lightning found the courage to study more, return for a second interview, and this time to be offered the job. He was predictably delighted, but he also draws a lot of inner satisfaction from knowing that he found the courage to face his fears and past rejection and try again. Ever since, he has been a thorough and conscientious worker, setting off early each morning with Matisse riding on his back. Matisse loves the quiet of the library and the opportunities it affords for a quiet nap in his shell whilst Notorious Lightning stamps, shelves and catalogues. It's the only peace Matisse gets some days: the house is so full of noisy pets and equally noisy minions that the library is easily the best place to catch up on his sleep. At home he tucks himself into his shell on Notorious Lightning's desk, just next to the bottled lightning that was a surprisingly thoughtful present from the normally scatterbrained Paradise Circus. The bottled lightning made Notorious Lightning smile ruefully at first when he would catch sight of it on his desk; he's always felt it hard to live up to his name and his attention-grabbing coloring. Both have often seemed like a wicked irony on such a quiet, self-doubting creature. But his work at the library has given him a confidence that hasn't always been there in the past, and between his daydreams of mighty deeds and legendary heroes, more realistic goals have begun to suggest themselves. He takes advantage now of every quiet moment at the library to study more and more, secretly nursing a hope that maybe - just maybe - someday he might be able to take and pass the entrance exam for the Subeta Agency of Intelligence. He's even started training at the gym after work each day to buff up and toughen up, just in case he's ever offered the interview, and the chance to become one of those heroes he's always daydreamed of being.
