Betsy is the first to admit that yes, your husband talking to her is really not a good thing. She's a bold young thing that haunts the party scene, with sweet words and a sweeter mouth, and has far too much common in men for women to want to befriend her, unless these women want to be nuns (and Betsy wouldn't really get along with a nun, anyway.) She's wrecked her fair share of homes and embittered so many children for life that one has to wonder how she lives with herself.
The truth is that she doesn't.
She is the child of a wealthy businessman and a streetwalker, a prostitute. Her father married her mother, in answer to some strange inner moral that arose after a night with a prostitute, but he never stopped visiting brothels, and her home was so stormy she often wished as a child that they might divorce and get it over with. She has glimpsed too much of the streets and the drawing rooms both to be suited to either, and so she hovers awkwardly between them, the grace of the socialites and the vulgar buzz of the common drunkards.
She escapes the nameless torment inside her each night with every imaginable vice. Alcohol, drugs, men. But she wakes to the same thing every morning -- a hangover, someone's father in her bed, and a life so meaningless she hurts others to give it definition.
