Dear Hagen,
Surely you already noticed how things started to change.
The Russians proved to be a very strong enemy. Obviously they have a better supply of food and munition than our army and it's not even winter by now. During the next few months things will become even more difficult. The winters in Russia are usually very long and cold. Our army don't have the slightest idea what is about to come. That will be the time the enemy will take their advantage to defeat our already starving and exhausted army and there are also still the western forces. But I won't loose my faith in our country and the Fuehrer.
Son, I am already old and seriously ill. My whole body is aching just from writing this letter. I really can't take the exertions of this war anymore.
I hope you will be able to keep your good work in here up, being the new lead of the camp. Fulfill the dream of our Fuehrer without me standing in your way. You are young and full of ideals. You know what it takes to make Germany win this war.
I count on you.
Erich Schwarz
Hagen had burned the letter a few minutes later. First he was angry at his father leaving him like this, all alone. Whom should he now ask for advice? But then he started to understand. His father had been sick the past few years. Hagen had known how bad he had felt. And his father had left him the letter to tell his son that he was full of confidence about Hagen's ability to run the camp alone.
But now sitting on this bench in the middle of the night Hagen wasn't too sure about it anymore. The situation in the eastern theatre of war heated up and the army of the USA had started to attack Germany. Beside that he had got the order to destroy all evidences.
"This war is far from being over.", Hagen thought loudly.
He would soon find out that he was grievously mistaken.
Two months later a unofficial statement reached the camp.
"The Russians are on the march. Warsaw back in the hands of the Russians. Allied forces nearly at the Rhine."
The SS immediately started to evacuate the camp, leaving the inmates to their own devices.
"Did you destroy the documents I gave to you?", Hagen asked the young SS soldier.
"Yes, Sir.", he answered.
"Good.", Hagen said without looking any further at the boy. "Did you check if all prisoners are confined to their barracks?", he added then.
"Yes, I did."
"Very well, than lets get our bare necessities into the cars and leave this place before the Red Army invades.", Hagen said with a blank look.
The young man immediately left to tell the other men to get ready and Hagen decided to take a last walk trough the camp he had led the past years.
He let himself drop onto the wooden bench where he used to spend so much time thinking about everything. At the beginning of the war he had often sat here with his father. They had spend hours talking about the camp.
Thinking about it now it seemed like it had all happened a long, long time ago.
His father was dead, the war was lost and he and a handful of man would soon try to make their way through East Prussia to get back to Berlin.
"Everything will go well.", he tried to reason himself. "If we manage to weather the winter, there is a good chance our army will be able to to change tack."
Thinking like that made him confident. He walked to his barrack, grabbed his suitcase and walked over to the waiting convoy. Everybody was just waiting for him but Hagen didn't care. He was the leader of this camp and he loved to make his influence felt, even during a time like this. Hagen hopped into one of the cars and the convoy started to move.
Hagen took a last look at the camp, mentally saying goodbye to his old life, before they turned around a corner and the camp disappeared from view.
