Sadbh
--- Brave --- Cautious --- Motherly --- Hopeful ---
The Cursed

What would you give for the people you love?

Looking at me now you see a wild animal. Few humans guess that, at one point, I was as human as they are. I laughed, I cried, I loved. But, as we all know, everything has a price.
It was either I wander this world alone or my husband and son be put to death. So now I am chased, never given any rest. Even during those brief moments when I can feel the grass under my feet, the moments when I am human, I know that it will not last. It is only a matter of time before he finds me and changes me for denying him what he craves. He never will give in and neither shall I; if it means I am forever confined to the form of a deer... Then so be it.
A long time has passed since I turned my back on my family, and I do not regret the decision. And yet...
I can't help but miss them.

Brief History

Sadbh was born to an Irish king, the exact one lost in history. Because of her beauty she was even said to be a changeling and the daughter of Bodb Derg, a sidhe king.
On her nineteenth birthday Fer Doirich, a druid of the Tuatha Dé Danann, announced his love for her and asked for her hand in marriage. She refused him and, as punishment, was cursed to take the form of a deer. Three years later one of Fer Doirich's men, taking pity on her, told her of the fort of the Fianna of Ireland, a band of mercenaries, and that if she entered the building the curse would be broken.

She traveled there and came upon Fionn mac Cumhail, the leader of the Fianna, out hunting. Instead of attacking her, his hounds realized her to be human, as they had once been human themselves. Fionn took Sadbh to the fort and the curse was broken. The two soon fell in love and were married. It is said that Fionn, loving the woman so, gave up all pleasures but her. As one would except, she soon became pregnant.

A band of vikings attacked the Fianna and Fionn left Sadbh home to go and fight. Fer Doirich took on the form and voice of her husband and called out for her to help him. She raced out of the house, bow and arrows in hand, when the illusion was broken. He gave her a choice; to come willingly as a deer once again and never see her husband or watch him and his men die. She chose the first.

Fionn searched for her over a period of seven years but Sadbh was never found. At the end of the seven years he found a young boy on his land. Recognizing Sadbh's features and his own the boy's face he knew he was looking at their son. He named him Oisín, who became a famous warrior poet.

Sadbh continues to wander with a violent herd of fallow deer, never resting in one place for long, wondering what happened to her son and husband.
