The Goddess

The world is dark . . . black and colourless . . . The night comes and no one knows . . . It is the same as day . . .

I will change that!

I will bring light to the night! I will put stars in the sky! Just because no one else will do anything about it doesn't mean I shouldn't! I will put rainbows in the sky! I will teach the deaf to hear, the blind to see and the mute to speak! I will teach the lame to walk, the earthbound to fly, and the skeptics to believe!

This world will be one of bright colours and imagination! There will be no concrete, only flowers and grass! Why should we live in a world we despise?

What if you cannot change this world? What if the people are too stubborn, too stupid to change, to believe? What if it is nothing more than a lost cause?

Then I will make a new world.

The Legend

The goddess Atlene is said to have come from a land far from our own. From another world entirely. Her world was bleak and war ridden, a terrible place for anyone to live. The grass had all died long ago and been replaced with concrete and blacktop. Garbage lay in heaps around the edges of towns, and hunger stricken children rooted through it for the means to survive. Rats died of starvation, or extermination, and anyone who expressed a love for the long gone nature was eradicated. Atlene was an optimist, and a survivor. She had hunger in her belly, but she still gave her rations to the starving children and homeless. She let the cold ones huddle close to warm, furry, golden body to hopefully stave off death for another day or two.

However, soon it proved that people would die regardless, and they would die in millions. Horrified, she tried her best to change the world she lived in, desperately trying to bring plants from between the cracks in the pavement, or anywhere the soil just might be able to see the sun. Every time she had a leaf going, it would be sprayed with weed killer. The substance was so pungent that no plants would ever grow where it was sprayed. Atlene's powers were useless against such a chemical. She tried calling upon the rain to wash it away, but it continued to linger.

Eventually, she decided that this world was beyond saving, and she took who she could carry. Atlene's powers allowed her to make her body larger, to about the size of a rhinoceros, and she was able to carry a few children and animals on her back. She couldn't carry adults, they would be too heavy and would result in her taking fewer people. For many days it was just her, the children, and the animals wandering the stars for another home. They had brought food, but it wasn't much. They ate little, trying to make it last.

Some of the children died of starvation, and Atlene regrettably had to lose them in the stars. A sorry excuse for a burial, but it was all she could offer. Soon, she was left with only two of the original children and one last animal. The children, one young boy and one young girl, held the rabbit in their arms. As they passed through space, Atlene's deep golden coat began to gather the stars and they would huddle into intricate golden patterns around her body. Her fur itself gradually grew darker, until it was a deep blue. Some stars hit her body and became light blue specks on her gleaming coat.

Atlene herself was nearly finished, tired and hungry and losing hope, when they spotted a planet, similar to their own. The children hollered in triumph; they had found what they were looking for. As they neared the planet, Atlene touched down, unrecognizable from her previous state. Her coat may no longer have been golden, but her heart was pure as ever. She treaded the soft ground, tasting the grass and fruits. The rabbit gnawed at the plants, happy for the food. As did the children. They jumped around, adrenalin fueling their movements. They ate strange fruits growing from trees, and nuts they found on the ground. When their bellies were full, they lay next to each other in the shade of a willow-like tree. Atlene joined them and reverted back to her smaller form. They all slept, grateful for the rest, but none so much as Atlene.

Though the land was rich in plants and water, there were no creatures. Atlene and those she'd brought soon became lonely, not satisfied by each other's company. Atlene decided to test her powers and pulled together many plants and a bit of dirt. She fashioned them into feathers and bone, muscle and beak. Soon, a dove flew around her and into the sky, calling out its happiness to be alive. Atlene, empowered by her discovery, continued to create animals, big and small, carnivorous and herbivorous. She winced at the thought of her creations killing each other, but shrugged it off. It was nature, and she wanted her world to be natural.

Soon enough, she created more humans for the children to play with. Her creatures populated this world and made it their home. Whenever someone got close to becoming like those on her other planet, Atlene erased their memories and made them begin anew. This world would not be the same. It was her world, and it would stay beautiful.
