The Foundering Vessel - Typhoon Coming On Off The Delphi Beach

By: Sir Jacob Mallarchy Watford Tremaine

Medium: Oil on canvas

When Tremaine was only 15 years old, his first paintings were exhibited at the Grand Academy. He quickly gained success for his fantastically colored paintings of steam ships and storms, depicting the awe and terror of the sublime. Tremaine himself remains a mystery; he was closed off for most of his life, never a socialite like some artists and poets of the time. Even his most staunch defender and his eventual biographer, Jack Rustin, knew little about the man. However, his work lives on as a staunch testiment to the power of nature.
