Communication (Paper Flock)

By: Anna Ikari

Medium: Paper

Inspired by starling murmurations, the movement of which can be modeled mathematically, Ikari used computer simulations to define the shape of this work. The positioning of each paper bird, far from random, was precisely determined based on a snapshot of her simulation. Viewed as a whole, the work itself resembles an abstract bird raising its wings in flight, clearly an intentional decision on the artist's part. Some critics claim that this is not art (or at least not Ikari's art), feeling that Ikari had done nothing but copy a computer-generated model. Others, however, feel that the act of turning science into something whimsical and tangible is clearly art. We invite you to judge for yourself!
