Also, you could do so much with the pets other than turn them into generic human characters.
No, they don't make things more interesting and creative. In all honesty, they do exactly the opposite for me. You could argue that maybe a few human overlays were creative, but almost every single Spotlight pet being a dull, boring humanized pet is getting really old-hat. I'd really like to see some more straight out pet characters. ...Or at the very least something that's not human.

That is an awesome freakin pet! I love it and I love Daryl! But...I haven't seen season 3 yet...I should have stopped reading, but I couldn't help myself...please don't tell me those spoilers were true ;___;

Personally I think it is creative in the fact that it pays homage to one's favorite characters in a unique way.
I think if Daryl was a subeta animal, he'd definitely be a bloodred Feli, who is ferocious, but has its cat moments of uncertainty.
