Hello all, Alex here.
First off, let me say happy new year to everyone! I really enjoyed my holidays this year, and I hope you did too.
That said, I'd like to make a new years resolution of sorts. Just prior to Christmas, our "recode" version of wardrobe was opened to Gold Account holders for beta testing, and will probably officially replace the old wardrobe before the end of January.
The Recode is a total replacement of Subeta's programming and is absolutely vital to ensuring that the site can continue to grow. The problem is that we're already feeling these growing pains. Recode will eventually fix these, but only when a substantial part of the site is running recode programming. I don't want to wait that long, and I'm sure you don't either. So I'm beginning a "stability project" for Subeta, of which recode is only a part. The stability project will address issues in Subeta's code, servers, database, and handling of downtime. The goal: 99.9% uptime/month by Dec 31st, 2009. I think we can make it!I won't go into much detail about the project here, but I will list some key points:
* Automatic recovery from SQL lockups: This is actually already working. You may have noticed (I hope you have) that the site doesn't go down for hours at a time now. The lockups are now detected and the database reset automatically, within minutes of it happening. No more waiting for Keith or myself to notice the problem and correct it.
* Tune-up of Subeta's old code to reduce the load on the database and eliminate "bottleneck" points that cause lockups.
* Changes to old code necessary to support running the site on a MySQL master/slave system instead of on just one database server.
* Downtime tracking and reporting! We'll need to keep track of when and how long the site is down to measure progress.
* And many more small changes that I hope will make a big difference!
None of this can happen overnight, but expect to see things gradually improve over the course of 2009, starting soon! Thanks so much for being patient with us in the meantime!I hope that was simple and understandable enough.
I'll address a couple of FAQs:
Will this delay the recode (much)?
Yes, but like I said, better to fix the problems now rather than wait for recode to fix them later. It shouldn't delay it by much though, recode is part of the stability project and ultimately the goals are the same.
That sounds nice, how can I help?
I may have need of some testing volunteers eventually, but for now please just be patient with us.
Why haven't you done this sooner?!
Really, it is a work in progress. Up until now though, there really has been no yardstick for progress made, other than "we had a lot of database problems this month," etc. The idea of the stability project is to attain a stability goal (99.9% uptime/month) by a deadline. With the ability to measure downtime, we will be able to focus our efforts on those activities that are having the greatest effect, which often are not the ones you'd think would.
Does this mean you will be fixing the ______ bug?
Most likely, current bugs will be fixed when their area of the site is recoded, unless they are related to stability problems. As it is, it is hard to tell whether bugs are caused by bad coding or simply what I call "server weather conditions" (e.g. high load causes a mysql connection reset in the middle of an attempted trade), which are more difficult to track down.
As always, we really appreciate your patience and support. Without you guys, we wouldn't have anyone to do all this work FOR!

I had to start over on my item hunt because of the dowtime. But, i am not crying about it. I will live. Keep up the good work and hopefully we will see smooth sailing soon! ^^
I'm really glad and appreciate what you are doing for the site ^^ but it seems that the downtimes come more and more frequent. Before they came now and then and lasted for hours. But I was ok with that since they didn't occur often. Now though the downtimes feel like they come every 5min and are really really annoying even though I'm glad that they only last for like 5min.
i am very appreciative of the update, i've been waiting for one. D; however, it really is annoying to try to do a quest and get stopped in the middle every time by a MySQL error. especially since i support the site financially :/ i would have bothered beginning to purchase GAs a while back if the site was more stable...however, i understand, and i can't wait until the recode is finished. thanks for all the work everyone is doing on it. (:

Good luck with fixing the problems guys <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />
I'm sure that they will reach the requirements a few months before the deadlines, I have confidence in them!

Lol, this recode has taken about a year now. I don't think there is much point, really.
Thank you Alex, and thank other staff that are trying to address these negative comments sparsely interspersed with all the ones with kudos to you. I love this site, and believe me, I've been on others before now. I was blessed the day someone told me about Subeta. I am here for the duration...until you stop running the site, or until I stop running...whichever comes first. As I'm going on 66 yrs of age, I might reach the finish line before the site does. LOL!!
Thank you for being so prompt and thorough with your notices to us, as quickly as you know something concrete to tell us. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

i will volunteer and thanks subeta for the early notices and thats why we love you <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

In regards to some previous comments--This site is spectacular at informing their users about what's going on and they really don't have to at all; regardless of whether or not you feel entitled to it because you choose to pay real money. Subeta kind of spoils their users with things and instead of being grateful people push for more. They don't only tell us what they're planning to do but go into details and simplify it so everyone can understand. I think it's marvelous and although it's always easy to demand more and want more I don't think everyone should go as far as complaining as response to a news post that is showing how they plan to improve the situation.
And even though the site may have its 'hiccups' frequently, I'd rather that for less than 5 minutes than have it happen once or twice for hours. Luckier yet that major problems get fixed when they're caught not 10 hours later when it's a business hour like most other places.
And I think some people are blaming staff for their own lack of reading comprehension because this news post kind of informed you about everything you're asking about...

As downtime goes, this is nothing. Thanks for the news post and the good work, and a happy new year to yopu!

LLamma, if Keith or alx made a newspost as soon as the issues showed up, without knowing what was the issue, it would have been like going to the doctor, to be told you were ill.
It's not pertinent at all juste to make a newspost about 'The site is broken'. Our customers deserve better than that, and when we have the information, our boys give the info to them. Complete info.

Wow, so if I went to a store here at home. Spent money on items there, took them home only to find out the next day that the roof of the store crashed in during the night, the store would have to inform me right away of the situation? Get over yourselves about buying from the Cash Shop. You pay for items you want, not to have a part in how the site runs, when it gets fixed or how it will be fixed.<br /><br /> Thanks for the update guys, it is appreciated.

That's brilliant <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> All the downtime gets annoying sometimes. This is such great news, and I'm sure you'll get all the support you need from the whole subeta community. Good luck!
The mere fact that you know how to handle all those server things makes me admire you __
Go, Subeta staff. I'm with you. The occasional downtimes only make me see there's a real world beyond Subeta, lol xD <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

I'm gonna miss that squirral x: It was always fun for me when I spent hours refreshing, waiting for it to go away, and having my mom come up to me asking 'Why on EARTH are you watching a squirral!?"
xD Ah good times. But thanks, as always, for keeping us informed Keith <3 I used to be apart of a site that didn't even inform us when something as important as an owner change occured cough This is one of the reasons I love this site so much ^^

@withlove: the only thing you can do is stop playing subeta, so there won't be that much traffic, as said in all posts alex recently has made, but no one wants you to stop playing, so what you can do is being patient, as alex said in this post <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

Yay! Now the stupid squirell won't stay up for hours! I swear, I wanted to shoot that thing. Urgh.
Well, I know everyone wants to help. So do I. Let me know if I can. Together, I think we can all do something.
By the way, thanks for all the help. I, and I'm sure the others agree, it's nice having you guys do this kind of stuff. I mean, I hate that squirell! Next time I see a squirell on the side of the road, and it's in a santa suit, I'm going to laugh at it. Then run it over; but only if it's wearing the santa suit.

Well I am glad ya are working on it!! I just hope people do NOT go on rampant squirrel killing sprees!

yay your doing an awesome job!
i would like to see more lively squirrels though the dead ones make me said T_T but im sure u have better things to do hehe

I can't believe all the complaining and whining over a website. I support the site financially. I like it... I spend my time here. If you don't like the hiccups that go along with that... there are other places online for all of you who don't have a patient bone in your body to go. In the MEAN TIME... Keep up the great work guys. Those of us who matter, are sticking with you.

No Llamaa - every time the "squirrel pic" goes up, there's a message underneath it. Most times it's something unique pertaining to the situation at the time. A small message of basically what's wrong and their acknowledgement that they know there's something wrong and are working on it.
Read underneath the pic next time you see it and you'll see what I mean. But no, I don't expect a post in the news every time there's a hiccup. They keep us informed pretty damn often as it is, I think. No need to do a daily update or anything like that.
And to think they need to make a news post as soon as they spot a problem? Again, they don't owe us an accounting of their every move. I think it's better to be patient and wait through it a few days to wait and see what information they can provide us.
You obviously missed my point that they said earlier in this comment section that - and I shall quote Keith now to make sure you get it this time: "We waited until we had information, and a plan." So there could have BEEN no news post prior to this one. Comprende?

Subeta team you are doing a really really wonderful job of keeping the site online and I dont mined the down time as I know you are getting all the bugs and stuff fixed ( give you all a pat on the back ) <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> happy New year to you

The server upgrade in 07 took DAYS....and the unmentionable incident took us down for the better part of weeks. I can handle a few minutes at a time. This is a walk in the park compared to the way it USE to be. And ya know what guys? We stayed because we LOVE the site AND the staff. We get WAY more perks for next to nothing, if not nothing at all, than ANY of the other pet sites. I, for one, appreciate all the hard work. So Thank You~!!

Raineykins - They acknowledge it in the forums, or the news? I am speaking of the news. Not everyone checks the forums, or knows where to looks in the forums for updates, or for posts from admins, etc.
It would be nice to have a quick news post as soon as someone spots a problem, and not to have to wait several days. That is my point.

My problem is a bit of an emergency and I sent in a ticket and was told to post it in the forums...but if I do then it might cause some serious problems...Azshua said she would relay my issue to a programmer. Thanks for the update!

Llamaa - they DO acknowledge there's a problem and do the best to give an overall idea of what's wrong every time the squirrel pic goes up. MANY times I've seen messages stating the very basic of what's wrong and that they're working on it. It's not always the same message, so it doesn't seem to be a 'canned' response and coming 'live' from whomever is working on things at the time.

Thanks for the update. I assumed the downtime was part of the recode plus the extra users online for the giveaway, but it's nice to hear it straight from the people in the know. The squirrels are annoying but at least they aren't lasting hours OR days like in the past. And steps are being taken to improve it, so I can live with it. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> Thanks again for the update! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

AMEN to that. You young-uns don't know what true downtime is. You expect uptime to be handed to you on a silver platter. Well, when I was a whippersnapper, we had to work our fingers to the bone for days on end in uptime factories just so we could do one wizard quest! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" />

I really appreciate the time you guys take to actually let all the users know what's been going on, what is going on, and what will be going on. I know I say this every time we get one of these posts, but I want you all to remember it. ;o
It's good to know that these errors are being worked on, or will be soon enough. Not to rush y'all or anything, but I'm really getting sick of the sight of squirrels. So much for letting my dog chase them now. xD

Woah thanks for explaining! And good luck! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />

GreenEyes - voluntarily paying cash for things you don't have to does not mean Keith and the rest "owe" you anything. I'm GA and I paid real money for the first three months worth so far and I don't EXPECT them to tell me a damn thing. The fact that they DO is awesome x10 and I so appreciate it. But I dare say I certainly don't feel a sense of "entitlement" to it.
There's nothing in our GAs that states we are entitiled to an accounting from the staff.
And Llamaa - the reason it took "several days" for them to be able to make a post to us, as Keith mentioned earlier in the comments here, is that it took that long for them to figure out exactly what the issue was and come up with a reasonable plan of action.
Sheesh impatient people. But perhaps I'm more patient since I've been on their side of sites before so know the headaches - and sometimes downright mysteries - that plague any site like this.

yet as always there may just be drawbacks
so I wish you all the best luck!!!
and also thank you for trying to do the best for the site.

Don't get me wrong, I am super-gigantically happy that there is now something to kick the site back into full-gear when it decides to take a short nap, but it doesn't help that every 5-15 minutes, it takes one of those naps. Usually write in the middle of me shop pricing, responding on the forums, or commenting someone.
It also took days for someone to tell us what is going on.
I am glad the site is up at least, but I get tired of having to try and remember to copy everything I just wrote before hitting submit, and of having to test on a different page to make sure the site is up at the moment before setting shop prices.
And don't even get me started on Quests. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_sigh.gif" border="0" />

for the rest thanks for the explanation and happy new year to you too

Awesome. I definitely noticed the MySQL errors were 'correcting themselves', it's been wonderful! =) Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for letting us know what's going on! I've been patiently waiting out the downtime... One has only to pay attention to the number online in comparison to the number of problems to know they are at least somewhat related.
Growing pains or not, the fact you are informing us of the steps you are trying to take to fix the problem (when you don't necessarily HAVE to) makes you 200% more awesome than the staff of any other site I've been on and means I will continue giving you my money. (As if I could resist the awesomeness of Gifts of Fashions Past and MCTs anyway. LOL)

I know I am going to sound stupid..but that means nothing to me...I am lucky I know how to turn on a computer..little won what a recode is! but as long as this down time is recognised and I know someone somewhere is trying to fix it that is all i am concerned about. Thanks and goodluck!
oh yay and thanks for all of your hard work...I cant wait for my favorite site to be the best one on the web as far as stability.

Not only the three-day downtimes. We've had weeklong downtimes in the past. Horrible stuff. Though it's annoying that it's just intermittently up and down, it's better than being consecutively down for hours upon end.
Thanks for the update, Alx.
But seriously; can we stop with Santa squirrel? I'm more of a fan of the <a href="/redirect.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.themaskedloser.com%2Fimages%2Fsquirrel.jpg" target="_new">MOAR SQUIRREL</a>.

downtime? this is nothing! a few minutes here and there. Remember the 3 day downtime we had a year or so ago? Thank you for all the hard work for us. We Love you Subeta.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to explain this all to us, Alex. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
It is nice to have updates on what is going on and what the goals for the site are. Many places just leave you wondering or talk to the players like they could not possibly comprehend the changes being made. One more thing that makes Subeta a great place to play. Looking forward to a great new year. Thank you to all the staff and Keith for making this a wonderful, friendly place to spend a little of my time each day.
All I can say is this is awesome! Thanks guys, I appreciate it. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
And lol a LOT at people complaining about "all the down time recently". Really? They don't know what down time is unless you've been here a few years, right?
I've totally noticed the Automatic recovery from SQL lockups <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> It's been great knowing that if I'm just patient for a minute, all will be back. I'm also careful to have another window open to check that the site is working before repricing my shop lol.
I have to say, this site really does kick the @ss of every other pet site out there and the amount of work that everyone does to make sure it's better and more fun really shows. I try to do my part by buying a few cash shop items whenever I can.... I know that's a big part in making sure the equipment gets updated <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

I have noticed the site doesn't go down for as long or as often as it used to, at least until this last month. But it is much more bearable nowadays. And Happy New Year to you!
Alex, some of us wish you would at least put whether your female or male on your blank profile, a lot of us say him/her, lol....HUGz and good luck with that database/server thingy

I volunteer to help. Can see why the site is being glitchy. I understood the update in new just fine. Most places just close site off with no updates. Keep up the good work

Or maybe via comments, or something.
Instead of saying "Oh, Obviously this is all your fault." when we're making a post about fixing the problem.

There are things you should say, and things you should perhaps bring up in private with Keith via smail, maybe?

Thanks for the update/explanation of things, Alex.
I can't wait to see/notice the changes that you've mentioned. Team Subeta, as I like to call you guys, is great and always looking out for the site and it's users. All the fixes will be wonderful and will make the site better.

It is so worth the wait. You and your team do such wonderful work here and this past holiday proved your worth. Thank you for a great place to have fun and find friends.
Yes-many thanks for keeping us players informed. This is very reassuring and am sure you and your staff will do a great job.
Good luck with all of this mumbo jumbo! I hope the site works better when it's all said and done. :]

Again, a huge 'THANK YOU' & Kudos to all concerned.
Without your time and patients the site would not be as awesome as it is.

It's good to hear that there will be some changes soon. I think the site really needs it. Because it seems like there's more down time than up. I've seen the site go down more than 4 times today. It's nice to hear the staff getting together and making the site better.

I Semi-agree with her statement.I mean does seem like alot.I just feel bad for the people who pay for the gold accounts every month, or pay for them yearly and have to deal with all this downtime.
No, im not including myself, i got mine for free. Im just saying for people who pay faithfully.
Thanks for the Update! it's nice to know this will get fixed eventually.

Pshaw. Call this downtime? When I were a lass we had to complete Saggitarius' quests uphill in the snow both ways. And downtime lasted all winter.
Alex, you rock. love

To be honest ( no one shoot me, get the Damn squirrel!! ) when a site grows it has an AWKWARD period this is what we are enduring as Subeta works to adapt to that said growth! Also, me not liking it mo than anyone else but this is how it is!!
I'm not sure what you were trying to start, Collage - but you appeared rude and ungrateful. Shame, these people work so hard to give us a great site to use, and you do nothing but complain <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_confused.gif" border="0" />

We really only have one reason for unscheduled downtime: when the database server locks up (I seem to recall mentioning this in this post).
The database server really only locks up for one reason: when it gets overloaded processing queries, and can't get them done faster than they're coming in.
If you're looking at Subeta as a big black box (like most users) I can see why you'd assume that changes have to be responsible for problems. This is a logical fallacy though - correlation doesn't imply causation.
Think of it as loading a bunch of feathers onto a board. Eventually, one feather is going to cause the board to break, but is it that feather's fault? Of course not; there were simply too many feathers on the board at one time!

I would have thought it was obvious why the downtime was happening. Giveaway, winter break, advent calendar. December is the busiest time on Subeta. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why we always have problems now. Or perhaps it does...
Anyways, thank you for this post. Looking forward to the new Subeta when it's all done. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

You're right -- it's not something that should have to be put in place. I wonder if that's why we've made this post with the plan that we're putting into motion, with the goal of 99.9% uptime -- which would mean that this measure wouldn't need to be taken anymore.

Thanks very much Alex. Sub is a terrific site...and i would presume a lot of the downtime of late has been because of the great numbers of people loving the joint! Its usually when we hit the 1100 mark of members online that Sub starts to sink. IT IS just a matter of being patient and trying again in a minute or two!

I am glad that there is now an automated thing to make the site go up when it breaks down, but it has gone down at least 5 times in the past 3 hours. I don't think that type of measure should ever have to be put in place, or needed - but it has been needed numerous times just today.
What I want to know is why hasn't anything been said about the recent downtime and why are we just left guessing about all of it? No one has officially told us anything in the news - keith has said a few minor things in the forums (which I'd like to point out not even everyone that actually visits the forums sees what he posts) and I'm sure I am not the only one who is sick and tired of it.

One thing I'd like to add it, maybe we could do something about the forums? Dx It's kind of iffy the way they're set up, and I'm not asking you to conform to the way other sites *cough*gaia*cough* do it, but right now the format just seems like it's a small part of the site nobody really cares about, and we all know that the forums are pretty important indeed.
