Faeries are not kind. They are not generous, they are not caring, they are not cute, and most of all, they are not good. This isn’t to say that they all wish ill on humanity; some of them wish to only be left to their own devices, hidden away from prying eyes, but many of them have cruel, selfish intentions. They are not the cute, tiny little pixies fluttering around humans, wishing to grant them their heart’s desire out of kindness, nor are they tiny little elves building toys in tiny little human village replicas.

Faeries, overall, tend to fall under two distinctions. One is “seelie,” and the other is “unseelie” - in layman’s terms, seelie could be considered “good” whereas unseelie is “evil.” Truth be told, however, they’re much more similar than either group would like to admit, and seelie faeries are usually far from good. They’re both selfish, egocentric, and easily offended; the biggest difference between them is that unseelie are more prone to being violent when unprovoked, and a seelie far is more likely to pull pranks… However, faeries have different morality than humans, and said pranks are often quite cruel and harmful; they have little, if any, concern or thought to the consequences of their actions onto others.

Of course, faeries can be as varied as humans, and some truly care about humans and they would not pull intentionally harmful pranks. However, those truly “good” faeries are practically nonexistent, if they exist at all in the Faerie realms - for, in all of my years, the only good faeries I’ve seen are the caretakers and guardians residing in homes, such as brownies, hobs, and tomtes.

My family believed in the Old Ways. I remember when I was really young, we took care of our household spirits, and what traditions our peers forgot, we continued. My parents believed that faeries, the “Fair Folk” as I affectionately knew them then, truly cared about their followers. Then, I knew them to be strict, but powerful and caring guardians. But when I was called to them, I feel we were duped; in truth, what were they, truly? Perhaps even now, I do not know.

I wasn’t very old when it had happened. I was able five or six years old when I came down with the fever; I remember being kept in bed, and my mother being by my side much of the time, with a cold, wet rag in hand or bringing in fresh herbs and flowers from the garden. I was the youngest in the family, born late in my parent’s lifetime; I guess in a lot of ways, I’m grateful, since they were able to spend a lot more time with me, as they weren’t boggled down with new babes like so many other families, plus my parents had a lot of experiences raising my older siblings. But as time went on, despite my mother’s attempts, I grew weaker and weaker. Despite being so long, for a short sliver of time, I was well-aware of my own morality - and the fear of death had escaped me, and I nearly welcomed it.

I know what happened to me, but I cannot accurately recall of the details that happened, since by that time I started to get delirious with fever. My mother lost hope; her remedies could not save me, and I was getting weaker and weaker. So, she turned to the one thing she had left: The Fair Folk. Along with my father and my siblings, they whisked me away to the old, secluded parts of the forest that were traditionally used to commune with the Fair Folk.
Maybe they really cared about my family; my family had long worshipped and revered them for generations, even when so many other people turned their backs, and found other gods. Of course, I use the term “care” lightly; I’m sure their concern towards them was the continuation of their worship, but for whatever reason, during that night they paid attention to my family’s pleas and answered them.
