Hatori is a calm intellectual. Even since he was young he was the 'responsible one' looking after Ayame and Shigure. Ayame and Shigure are his cousins, and in the Sohma family you mostly socialize with relatives. Ayame is quite lively and a social butterfly. Shigure is mischievous and irresponsible. This is naturally why his friendship with the two would seem odd.

Upon first meeting Hatori you would find him cold and rather uninviting.This is mostly because he is unable to open up to others due to his past combined with a cold home-life as a child. He thinks that it's either not worth it to further a relationship, or is unwilling to risk hurting another person. He is actually very sweet and caring underneath, although this can be hard to see at times. At one point he is aptly compared to snow.

He comes from a long line of doctors. It is his lineage's role in the family. When someone finds out about the Sohma's curse, it is Hatori's duty to erase their memory. This is not some form of magic, but rather hypnosis.
