Sacred -- not holy. There was a world of difference.
The cave seemed split in two -- half of its stone was ordinary, brown-grey, dull.
At a fault in the ceiling and going down the opposite wall,
the stone was like silver-blue obsidian. It was said to be the window of a ravenous spirit.
The people called it Soul Stone, and before it they would lay their sacrifices and tribute,
for the spirit was always hungry.
The spirit came to be known for his love of snakeflesh,
and so the people gave the bodies of snakes.
The spirit came to be known for his love of worms,
and so the people gave the bodies of worms.
And somewhere, the people forgot. They grew out of their old superstitions and ritual.
The cave became an abandoned relic, full of mere stones and calcified snakeskins.
There was nobody making sacrifice. There was merely chalk... traced along the soulstone,
in the shape of the spirit. He was a horrible, many-spiked, lizardlike monster who glowed like the moon,
but really, nothing more than a chalk outline.
Perhaps magic was done. Perhaps the old stories were true.
Lodonite emerged, a being of crystalline, glowing stone, his coming heralded only by the moths
which swarmed to the light at the time of his birth from the wall.
Lodonite was unholy, sacred, and starving.Item not found: Overlay by Charles, small edits by me.
