sticking out of her heart.

the ones that she uses
to hypnotize guys.
She has many different zombies
who are deeply in her trance.
She even has a zombie
who was originally from France.
But she knows she has a curse on her,
a curse she cannot win.
For if someone gets
too close to her,

There aren't many people who can honestly say they're happy with what they have. It's an unfortunately frequent occurrence when people more often than not have everything they need but still long for more - or worse - possess the qualities needed to gain or achieve what they desire but no actual motivation to cultivate those qualities and work towards obtaining those aspirations.

Still.. there are those rare few, a handful or so of desperate individuals, that have just been cursed with what the general population would refer to as: bad luck. These people often only want for one thing, something precious that normal people customarily take for granted - something that would completely turn their lives around. Sometimes it's a clean bill of health. Or perhaps family, the opportunity to receive an education, friends, a guaranteed daily meal.. or the ability to have a child.What if someone could snap their fingers and give you what you wanted almost instantaneously? For a price of course. But, really, what would someone pay for something like, let's say, fertility? Some things you just can't put a price on.. not a monetary price, anyway.. but that's just..


"..a tee detail, beb. Yo be wantin' ta have dem babies o' not, sha?!"

"Yes, ma'am. I do. More than anything.. my husband and I, we've been trying for years. The doctors we've been to.. they all said I'm infertile, though. So I just, I'm not.. I'm so tired of the disappointments." The woman paused to dab the corners of her tearing eyes, exhaling a heavy sigh as she rested her head in her palm. "I'm just so blessed to have found you, it's a miracle."

The old cajun woman stared at her client for a moment but said nothing. She slid a piece of paper, seemingly blank except for the thick X burned into the bottom of the page, towards the distressed woman and walked to a cage that hung in the back of the dimly lit room. "Sign dare, chad." The witch barked as she gathered several things from shelves and drawers around the creeky-floored boat house.

Glancing up from the table, the woman pulled the paper closer, squinting her eyes down at it. She raised an eyebrow upon realizing it was blank but reached for the pen laid beside it anyway. "OUCH!" The woman shrieked, throwing down the deceptively innocent looking pen and wrapping her hand around her punctured finger. The pen had pierced the flesh on her middle finger which filled the chamber with her blood and dribbled it onto the bottom of the paper. "What was that for?! This paper is blank!"

"Don yo be bahbin at me, coo-yon. It don matta now. Yo jus' listen ta mama." Upon returning to the table, the elderly woman snatched up the bloody paper and tossed it behind her left shoulder.

To the younger woman's astonishment, the paper whizzed around the room briefly before filing itself away in a messy bookshelf packed full with other dog-eared papers just like it.

"Now yo look here, chad," whispered the woman with the wrinkly puckered mouth as she set down a bird's nest with a single egg in it, a white dove with it's wings and legs bound and a long, thin needle onto the table. "Yo wanna baby, ya? Yo'gonna eat dat dare egg - swallow it whole - and den yo'gonna send dat needle into da bird's breast. All da way tru. Don yo axe me nuttin. Yo do what yo told, sha, and yo gonna have a baby."

The woman looked mortified. For a moment she thought the old witch was trying to make a horrible joke.. but the unwavering serious look on the face staring back at her swiftly took the hope away. The thought of eating a raw egg was disgusting enough, but she had to kill a bird, too?! The woman let out a whimper that sounded empathetic and terrified at the same time and she sat there for a moment, shaking her head as she tried to gather herself.It's just a bird.. it's just a bird. There are millions of others just like it. This is for a baby. This is for a family.. She played those thoughts on repeat inside of her head as her trembling hand reached out and plucked the egg from the nest. In one swift movement, the egg was gently placed as far back into her mouth as it could be put and after a few struggling attempts it was swallowed.

"Dare yo go, beb. Now, pick up da needle.. it gonna be alright. Mama gonna make erryting alright for yo, chad. Yo gonna have dat baby.. she gonna be a beautiful bebelle, sha." The witch whispered, urging her client as sweetly as she could.

"I-It's going to be a girl?" Sobbed out the woman as she bravely grabbed the twitching, nervously cooing dove with one hand and the long needle with her other. "I always wanted a little girl. I'm so sorry!" With one quick thrust at the end of her apology, the needle pierced through the bird. It made a loud popping sound, which startled the woman and caused her to drop the dead bird onto the table. "I-is t-that all?" Whimpered the woman as tears rolled off her cheeks and dripped from her chin onto her neck and chest.



The old woman smiled and nodded. "Dat's all, sha. Now yo go on and have yoself a baby. Go on, passe'!" Standing abruptly, the witch grabbed the dead bird and the empty nest off her table and tossed it into her fireplace to be consumed by the churning orange flames.

"W-what? How much do I owe you, ma'am? When will I know that I'm pregnant?" The young woman was confused but she stood, reaching into her purse to offer the witch money.

Suddenly the old woman stormed over to her client and grabbed her by the shoulders, forcefully turning and walking her to the door. "Yo already paid me, coo-yon, now PASSE'! Yo already pregnant! Don't yo pass by here again now, chad!" The witch slammed her door behind the young woman and shook her head, throwing up her hands in frustration about how few people knew how proper voodoo worked.. as if they should.

Sure enough, Bebelle was born nine months later. Her mother died from unknown complications during childbirth and shortly later her father committed suicide out of anguish. Bebelle was not alone, though perhaps it would have been better if she had been.. because that night, before anyone had discovered the tragedy, the bayou witch claimed her payment.
