Wind surrounds her, rushing from between boughs and branches to her aid.

Lean, fast, white tail streaming behind her as she races with the wind under her control. A look of concentration is set upon her face. Something comes into view- a creature like herself, red fox ears and a tail tipped in black, holding a rough dagger. She dodges to the side, skidding on one foot and using the currents of air around her to spin her to face him. He lets out a snarl, and she seems to debate for a minute before rushing off again.

Using the wind behind her to push her forward, leaving the red fox in the dust, a small village- a few handfuls of small huts and tents surrounding a central well- comes into view. Smoke is rising from some of the houses, and there's a group of wolf people gathering nearby. Malandra, the hybrid of two tribes- one of foxes, one of wolves- reaches out and wind rushes around the wolves, putting out the flames and spreading the smoke far and wide.

The wolves look at her and one of the taller ones- robust and large, yet not intimidating- comes forward to her. Immediately, she is swept up in a hug, and returns it. He says only one thing-

Despite his words, she knows it is. Her stepfather was cruel, jealous over a dead woman- her mother- and took it out in her. Turned her half-brother against her, turned many in the fox tribe against her. Saying that a half-fox was no fox at all. The wolves- the tribe her father belonged to- embraced her when she came. Embraced both parts of her, and her stepfather knew where she was, resented her happiness here. He was set on erasing it, erasing her, erasing the unfaithfulness of a woman who never loved him, and chose to create a child with a man she did, a man she chose.

He would never stop.

She knew it.

So did her uncle, despite his words.

He was the last living family member who cared about her.

So he lied.

To protect him- to protect all of them- she would leave.
