She dug furiously at the wet, loose ground and sniffed. She had just lost her meal of the day -- a wriggly worm, as it burrowed even deeper into the earth. She gave it one last, angry swipe and left, licking herself underneath a tree's shade. It has been almost a month now, she thought, a month since I've been abandoned. Her stomach growled loudly sometimes as she trekked backyard after backyard, looking for a safe spot to spend the night. Sometimes, there were dogs, or raccoons, or just people who hated cats.
