The great warriors sat outside their huts sweating profusely. They had just finished battling the spirit demons who had leaked into the world. The sun baked their skin to a golden brown. The warriors were not the only ones who suffered in the stifling heat. The villagers complained of the river drying up and the crops wilting in the never-ending day. Chief Running Waters knew this could not last, the village was dying. Many children and older villagers were falling prey to the extensive heat. Running Waters was a wise man and taken himself up to the highest point of the land. He brought with him herbs to help with his spirit quest. Taking the herbs, he centered himself and waited patiently for the Great Sprits to hear his call. His legs went numb with the passage of time, but he remained as still as the mountains.

Wolf howled and woke Chief Running Waters from his thoughts. “You seek the council of the Great Spirits, mortal?” Wolf asked.

“Great Spirit Wolf, I did call upon you,” Running Waters explained, “the village is dying. The heat of the sun with no end is too great for us to withstand. The rivers run dry, unable to provide the land with drink. Our young and old suffer and are weakened. Even our greatest warriors tire more quickly in battle. Being wise as you are strong, I called upon the Great Spirits to plea for some relief.”

Wolf returned to his spirit brethren and called them to council. Hawk, ever the predator, said, “What we need is darkness to cloak the sun and make it easier for hunters to find prey.”

“Many things would benefit from darkness, but some light would be as equally beneficial,” remarked Coyote.

Suddenly, everyone’s attention was on Panther, who had become bored and started stretching and rolling on the ground. His large round eyes gleamed in the light and it was evident what course they would take.

Raven took one of his long black feathers and smooth and polished it. When he was finished he placed it in the sky, creating a black blanket around the earth and blocking the sun from shinning through. Wolf howled so loud and so deep that the earth shook and parts of it broke off. Hawk flapped his mighty wings and guided the fragments into the heavens. Then crafty Coyote shot fire into the fragments with his enchanted bow making them glow, much like how Panther’s eyes had when they reflected light—and thus called them stars. Polar Bear, who loved to swim in the coldest places of the earth, bit a part of the sun off and breathed his cold breath on it, cooling it enough to leave a dim glow. Hawk set the orb, which he called Moon, into the heavens with the stars. The Great Spirits were pleased with their work. This new creation brought about cooler temperatures when the sun would sleep. The crops grew, the rivers ran freely and the villagers prospered.

Generations have past and we have forgotten the stories of our grandfathers. We have come to fear the night, rather than see it for the wondrous gift that the Great Spirits have bestowed upon our lands.
