In the dark of night when a storm is thundering outside, what comfort do you turn to? When you're scared out of your mind, who do you turn to? Is it your significant other, a parent, a guardian, a sibling, a friend? Or perhaps turning on a light, creeping to the cupboards for a snack, or turning the TV on? Perhaps you turn to a familiar, good book, or a new, unknown novel. That's where my comfort lies. That's where it's always been. When I was friendless and alone, a good book helped me through it. Stories have a way of taking you to far-off places, enchanting eras and magical mysteries. They help you to forget the troubles of today, if only for a little while. That's why I used to read, to escape. But reading can also cause you to forget about living out your own story. That's what I learned anyway.
I still read all kinds of books: big ones, little ones, fictitious, or true. Whenever I see a book I cannot resist to buy it and read it. Or borrow it from the library. I have this unhealthy obsession with books and their stories. I have a whole library of books, and keep my favorites in a chest I can take with me on trips. I also collect bookmarks, and they are everywhere about my room. Under the bed, in books, on shelves, stuck on the wall. I can never have too many bookmarks, just as I can never have too many books.
However, I have learned that books can also teach you lessons. They teach you who you want to be, what you want to do with your life, or don't. Books are my life. And they taught me who I want to be.
