I unlocked the door and greeted my aunt and little friends as I walked inside. I set the cups of hot chocolate I brought with me on the table by the couch. It was no ordinary couch, it belonged to Spike. He let a select few people sit on his couch, but you had to be special; otherwise it was only for him and his unrelated dog-sister Nala. As I helped my aunt clean the room, the dogs watched from the couch. When they thought I was not looking, they'd scoot closer to the edge of the couch. The smell of the hot chocolate kept wafting their way and they were eager to taste it.

When I joined the dogs on the couch, Spike was always the first to come say "hi" while Nala would play it cool and make you come to her. He'd try and lick very close to my face because he knew that was another source of the yummy hot chocolate smell. I always thought they understood what I was saying because I'd tell them chocolate was bad for them and they'd make little crying noises for what they couldn't taste. I even have photos of him sitting between myself and a friend: in the first photo, he's looking at the camera like the good boy he was. In the second photo, he's looking at the hot chocolate cup.

He passed away when I was 19 and Nala passed away less than a year after he did. I miss my small 'hot chocolate smell'-loving friends. ♥
