HPY is one groovy sister.
That's probably not her real name, mind you. No living soul seems to quite remember what that is. The day was August 17, 1969 at approximately 2:25 A.M. The place was Bethel, New York, in a field that attracted 400,000 believers in love, peace and music. The occasion, in case you hadn't already guessed, was Woodstock.
Her Old Lady could just make out the lyrics of “You Make Me So Very Happy”. Blood, Sweat & Tears were up on stage, singing for all they were worth. The music didn't quite have the power to tame the savage beast, for even a woman at peace with the world couldn't fully block out the negative vibes of the birthing process. Still, the glorious girl-child could have cracked even the concrete face of The Man, had he the ability to step down off his corporate throne and behold the beauty of new life.
As it was, her Old Man shed a few tears of his own when he took his daughter into his arms. She certainly had his looks. A xotl by birth, he'd made a deal with a wizard to alter his appearance, giving him the illusion of a handsome human man. (No, not the Old Wizard...though there are rumors the Cosmetic Wizard is a third cousin twice removed.)
Growing up a flower child, HPY's younger years were anything but your Typical American Upbringing. Her family tooled from one town to the next, just three in a mellow of hippies driving a beatnik van down the infant highways that were the asphalt blood vessels of a growing nation. She learned to strum at a very young age, doing her part for the group when they would get a gig or lending her honey-sweet voice when they were reduced to performing on street corners. They'd earn their bread...at least until The Man drove them to beat feet and seek the next town.
Music was the driving force in HPY's life and she knew all the songs of the time, though there was one in particular, an old song written by Wes Farrell and Danny Janssen, that she thought was really out of sight. It went like this:
Come On Get Happy
Hello world, here's a song that we're singin'
Come on, get happy!
A whole lotta lovin' is what we'll be bringin'
We'll make you happy!
We had a dream we'd go travelin' together
And spread a little lovin' if we'll keep movin' on
Somethin' always happens whenever we're together
We get a happy feelin' when we're singin' a song!
Travelin' along, there's a song that we're singin'
Come on, get happy!
Catchy, right?
Hey, man. Don't get all uptight. I was just getting back to the story.
As HPY grew up, her Old Man and Old Lady took great care of her, even though bread was a rare sight. (Maybe not quite out of sight...but close enough.) Most nights, she always had grub and a place to crash, anyways. The threads on her back were a little bare, but never ratty. She had a warm fire in the winter and an open field where she could see the stars on summer nights.
Until shortly after her 17th birthday. They went on a groovy trip to one of her Old Man's old haunts, a place called Peka Glade. She went to sleep and when she woke the next morning, her parents were gone.
She was bummed at first, but they'd left her guitar and as she began to explore this new horizon, a newfound sense of peace came over her. She found a bench beneath a nice, big willow tree near the water in a field of wildflowers. She began so strum and sing, ever so softly, enjoying the feel of the sun on her face.
HPY felt something she had NEVER felt before...
HPY felt at home.
