They took me away when I was five. It was the middle of the night, and our tiny, one-room shack was lit only by a single candle. My younger brother was asleep by it, and my mother stood over him, her hand resting on his forehead. She looked at him fondly, a look she never gave me. She didn't love me as much as she loved him, and I knew why. She made it very clear everyday.
It was because I'm a girl.
Girls were scum in our society; our only purpose was to give birth and serve men. Our opinions did not matter, nor did our health. As long as we could serve, we did. We were sold to whoever was willing to pay for us. That being said, I wasn't worth selling. I didn't get my mother's good looks. I got everything from my father. His potato nose, his snail's-pace metabolism, his stringy hair... everything. I was too ugly to become a wife. It wouldn't have been a problem if my father hadn't gambled away all of our money. We starved everyday and had to take scraps out of dumpsters to cover ourselves. We had no hope for redemption. That all changed when my brother was born. He was beautiful, born with a head of full, jet-black hair. His eyes were the colour of emeralds, and they shone twice as bright. Once you saw him, you'd fall in love with him. I was only three at the time, but I still remember how much I had loved him, resented him, grew jealous of him and felt the desire to protect him, all at the same time. It was soon that we realized he was quite bright. By his first birthday, he was speaking just as well as I was.
