The world is not always kind to those who have the ability to use magic.
Anastasia is one of those people, hated and feared for something she had no control over. The ability of magic does not always come to people because they train for it. To some, it comes as naturally as breathing or eating. Run out of town by at a young age, the mage found herself living on the fringes of society, deep within the woods, forced to live using the magic so many feared her for. With that magic, she found a curse, and a blessing; the thing that caused people to fear her also allows her to survive.
However, the curse is double-sided; without former training, she is a "hedge witch" - something that even "properly trained" mages may fear. After all, who knows what might go on deep within the woods? What forbidden magics might hedge wizards indulge in? Or, since they haven't been "properly" trained, who is to say exactly how collected they are with their magic? It's all superstition - mostly - but the fear that many people in Anastasia's homeland have towards magic is real. After all, the fear someone feels towards someone who could start a fire purely on whim with only their hands is understandable.
This sentiment towards magic is not the same everywhere; there are many places that accept it, and may as go as to pride and flaunt it. However, such places are often far away, and passage is both dangerous and expensive. For now, Anastasia finds herself minding her own hut, deep within the woods, and far away from the prying eyes that might remember her and her magic, living with her cats and maintaining her garden and what little livestock she has, trading with the occasional passerby.
